Genocide of Tamils

The outbreak of anti-Tamil riots in Sri Lanka did change the course of the nation?s history. Extensively organised anti-Tamil riots took place in Colombo and South of Sri Lanka. The riots lasted for several days and left over 3,000 Tamils dead and millions of dollars worth of their property were destroyed. Rather than stopping the genocide the Sri Lankan politicians, police, armed forces as well as the Buddhist clergy actively took part in many of the murders and rapes. Sinhalese community systematically attacked Tamils and destroy Tamil property, and the riots create a movement of refugees within the island. Thousands of Tamils fled to Tamil Nadu, Europe and North America.

The government headed by President Jayawardene refused to condemn the riots and did not even release a statement until after four days of mayhem. In 2004 President Chandrika Kumaratunga made a token apology to the nation. The ?apology? was accompanied by nominal compensation to some of the victims. Just 72.3 million rupees
$US702,000
was promised. To this day no one knew whether this was paid or not for the injuries and destruction Tamils suffered. Leaving aside the cost in lives, the loss of property alone in 1983 has been estimated to run into billions of rupees.

Genocide (Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide New York, 9 December 1948)

The United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines the term as: Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Slaughter of tamils by the sinhala state and its armed forces has been going on since 1956. Very few sinhalas have said or done anything about this appalling tragedy that has befallen the tamil people.

The sinhala man and woman on the street may not seem racist but when urged on by the sinhala racists they all become tamil haters and butchers.

Mahinda Rajapakse may seem a moderate but his actions over the past year do not give comfort or hope for the tamil people. Joining him will be a tragedy for the tamils.

Just reading Saints excellent take on the condition that brought the end for Bala. Interesting article. Thanks Saint. Will keep my comments to myself on that since I don't beleive in insulting the dead. But if anyone reads it, it's quite a revealing article.

he is by far the lesser of the two evils that are facing the tamil nation so far. bro. Choose wisely. VP holds no future for the poor tamils of this country.

Asithri

they will be just inviting a quick and brutal death!

TNA in a situation where ' Maga hitiyoth tho nasi, gedara giyoth abu nasi'

They are just puppets dancing to the LTTE's beat. If they want enjoy all the benifits as MPs, they have to serve LTTE dogs not the tamil people.

Before join them (TNA)in government , you must checked their identity and Send them to psychiatric clinics for getting anti traumatic treatment. Do not fool MR, President, do you think that they will give their hands for you to destroy sun god and his barberic team.

We need you as a leader of this country and do not try to get SIRISANGABO.

I doubt if MR is doing such a thing. But I do beleive that he is showing the TNA which side the bread is buttered and its better if they choose the right side. Remember he almost has a perfect majority in parliament now and any stragglers might not be looked upon favorably. But thats my opinion. So far, only TNA is not playing ball. Forget Ranil and the JVP. They are like the VHS of poltics now. Gone for good.
