SLA assaults Human Rights Advisor, SLHRC coordinator receives death threats

[TamilNet, Friday, 02 February 2007, 10:24 GMT]
The Legal Advisor of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SL-HRC) Jaffna office, Mudiyapu Remedias, an Attorney-at-law, registered a complaint Friday with the Jaffna Commanding Officer of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) that he was assaulted severely by a group of SLA soldiers near Stanley Road in Jaffna Town, Friday morning, when he was on duty. Meanwhile, S. Surenthirarajah, the Co-ordinating Officer of the organisation, also registered a complaint with the Jaffna police that he has been subjected to continuous threats to his life.
A group of the SLA troopers of the Road patrol unit on Stanley Road assaulted Mr. Remedias, despite his presenting his credentials as the Legal Officer working for the HRC, said the Legal Officer in his complaint.

Mr. Surenthirarajah, who is the only coordinator at the SLHRC, in his complaint lodged at Jaffna Police, has said that a person alleged to be the member of a `political party` had threatened him, with weapon and had made several phone calls warning him, on January 31st night.

He has also mentioned in the complaint that these threats to life and intimidations are being made due to the prominent role the Jaffna SL-HRC takes in investigating into, and exposing the continuing arrests, disappearances and killings in the Jaffna peninsula.

Already, two Co-ordinating Officers working for the Jaffna HRC had vacated their posts and had sought asylum in Canada because they were assaulted by the police when they went to the Jaffna police station to register complaints against the threats to their lives.

A Sinhalese Co-ordinating Officer working for the Jaffna HRC had earlier vacated his post because of the continuous threats to his life and to Surenthirarajah.

Remedias assists in the capacity of Legal Advisor to Surenthirarajah at the SLHRC office in Jaffna.

SLA kills last remaining witness to rape and murder of school girl
Friday, 02 February 2007
On Thursday Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers occupying Jaffna peninsula shot dead Mr Gananathan, 64, one of the last remaining witnesses to the gang rape and murder of school girl Krishanthy Kumarasamy.

Krishanthy Kumarasamy was abducted near her home in Jaffna by SLA soldiers in August 1996. She was allegedly gang raped and murdered by the soldiers. Family members who went on search for Krishanthy were also massacred.

Mr Gananathan who also functioned as President of the Jaffna Multi Pupose Co-Operative Society (MPCS) was heavily criticised by the EPDP paramilitary group for his role in the trial.

Mr Gananathan`s daughter Thayananthy then aged 19 was killed by trigger happy SLA soldiers who drove over her with a military truck.

Krishanthy was abducted while returning to her home from Mr Gananathan`s daughter`s funeral

then Srilanka Propaganda machinary was started the damage limiting excersise by
telling all of its media to publish LTTE killed this man.

when a foreign deplomat come to report government hands in abduction they blame him and accused him of white tiger.
as one tamil journalist said Alan rock should be glad he is not abducted by srilankan forces.

amil Tigers kill social worker distributing food to Jaffna people
Fri, 2007-02-02 13:43
Colombo, 02 February, (Asiantribune.com): S. T. Gananathan, 64, President of the Jaffna Multi Pupose Co-Operative Society (MPCS) in Ariyalai, a suburb of Jaffna, was shot dead early monring on Thursday (February 1, 2007) near Mampalam junction by `two unidentified armed men`, said TamilNet, the pro-Tiger website using the usual phrase to cover-up the killings of the Tamil Tigers.

Sri Lanka`s Ministry of Defence reported that Gananathan had been very active in distributing the food supplied to Jaffna by the Government. The Tamil Tigers have been very active in sabotaging the supply of food, including attacking ships that carry food to the people of Jaffna. The Tiger objective has been to exploit the shortages to blame the Sri Lankan government and win international sympathy. Tamils participating in the distribution of food are seen as collaborators with the government

Sources in Jaffna who refused to be identified for obvious reasons said that the Tamil Tigers have been threatening active social workers who have been in the forefront of distributing food supplies.

Gananathan, a retired engineer, assumed duties as the president of the MPCS, Jaffna when former president of the Jaffna MPCS, Solomon Sri, left Jaffna in December 2005 after receiving death threats.
In August 2006, Thellipalai MPCS president, Sivamagaraja was shot dead by unidentified persons.
The targeting of MPCS officials is a clear signal to the Jaffna Tamil not to participate in distributing government supplies of food.

The civilian sources said that Mr. Gananathan had ignored the LTTE threats with the firm belief that the outfit dare touch a social worker like him. But when he went to fetch water from a well close to his house in Punkankulam, along A-9 highway, he was assassinated by the Tigers who had studied his regular movements.
