Stop the `Flour Monster` in its tracks! Thursday, 27 December 2007 - 12:29 PM SL Time Prima has jacked up the wheat flour price by nine rupees per kilo again, causing the price of a loaf of bread to go up by three rupees. The kneejerk reaction of the government has been to pass the blame on to its opponents. Last time, the government blamed the flour price hikes on a controversial clause that had been surreptitiously incorporated into the Consumer Affairs Authority Act in favour of Prima. It was claimed that a bribe of one billion rupees had been paid for that clause! That was a very serious allegation, which should have been investigated promptly. But, the person responsible for that has not yet been named. Nor has any action been taken to amend the Act to deprive Prima of the alleged freedom to effect price increases at will. Minister of Trade and Consumer Affairs Bandula Gunawardena has vowed to take appropriate action against Prima. But, that vow will never be honoured, if experience is anything to go by. The Minister bellows out all sorts of noises and issues various threats but it is always Prima that has the last laugh. When another issue crops up and eclipses the flour price hikes, he always conveniently drops the matter and high prices are there to stay.

What can`t be cured must be endured? Wednesday, 26 December 2007 - 11:05 AM SL Time Parliament has become something like a pond infested with frogs during monsoon rains. It is full of croaking and leaps. The bush telegraph has it that some more political jumps are likely to happen in the next few weeks. The incidence of crossovers is so high that JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa recently made a tongue-in-cheek request in the House that an electronic board be put up at the entrance to Parliament indicating the strength of the Opposition and the government each day! A wag says it will have to be updated every hour, if not every minute, on the day of a crucial vote. However, political pole-vaulting has apparently come to be taken for granted and turncoats are going great guns. Today, our main news item says Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara has told a private television channel that he sees nothing wrong with defections. Owing to the Proportional Representation System that brings about weak governments, crossovers have become the order of the day and the Speaker seems to be going by the old adage: `What can`t be cured must be endured.`

Some Christmas thoughts Tuesday, 25 December 2007 - 11:06 AM SL Time It never rains but it pours! Floods have displaced thousands of people and destroyed hundreds of houses. Some bridges have given way and many roads are still under water. The flood level continues to rise in some areas aggravating the suffering of the victims. Eight districts have been badly hit. Wrath of weather gods seems to know no bounds. In the North, the military and the LTTE are girding up their loins for what is considered an imminent showdown. Skirmishes have already begun. People in the other parts of the country are living in fear of deadly bomb attacks. There seems to be no end in sight to the natural and man-made disasters! It is against this backdrop that Christmas is celebrated today. Joy and sorrow, as is the way with life, exist cheek by jowl. After today`s celebrations comes tomorrow`s commemoration of those who perished in the Boxing Day tsunami, the worst ever natural disaster this country has experienced.

Kumble rattles Australia despite Hayden century Thursday, 27 December 2007 - 12:29 PM SL Time Legspinner Anil Kumble took five wickets Wednesday to overshadow Matthew Hayden`s 28th test century and put India in a strong position after the first day of the first cricket test against Australia. India captain Kumble (5-84) made it clear his team would not be intimidated by the big-name Australians, claiming the wickets of Phil Jaques, Mike Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist and Brett Lee to leave the home side on 337-9 at stumps. Stuart Clark scored 21 runs from 17 balls as he and fellow tailender Mitchell Johnson weathered the final overs to see out the day on a deteriorating Melbourne Cricket Ground wicket. After combining with Jaques for a steady first-wicket stand of 135 runs, Hayden brought up his century when he cracked an R. P. Singh ball for four runs in the 43rd over. The century was his 19th scored in Australia, surpassing Donald Bradman and Ricky Ponting with 18 each.

Australia prepare `sickly` for Test Wednesday, 26 December 2007 - 11:04 AM SL Time The Australian cricket team`s preparation for the first test against India beginning Wednesday was sideswiped by criticism from former players. Vice captain Adam Gilchrist says his side is `a little bit sick` of it. Retired leg spinner Shane Warne and ex-Australia captain Ian Chappell criticized former national coach John Buchanan in newspaper stories over the past several days. Both have been critical of Buchanan in the past, and Chappell said on the weekend that his daughter might have done a better job of leading the Australian team. Last week, Warne said Australian cricket was in danger of becoming arrogant and he labeled Buchanan as `a goose.`
