Prabha lives 40 ft. under in the Alampil jungle -Adele Monday, 24 December 2007 - 3:27 AM SL Time Tamil Tiger Leader Velupillai Pirapaharan lives more than 40 ft. underground in a massive, well provided, and seemingly impenetrable bunker complex hewn from rocks in the middle of a thick jungle in northeast Sri Lanka.
Adele Balasingham, the Australian-born wife of the late Anton Balasingham, the LTTE`s ideologue, describes Pirapaharan`s office cum residence in the Alampil jungles, in her book The Will To Freedom. `Our cadres led us down the steps into a room about thirty to forty feet underground. To our amazement, we could see that this subterranean haven of tunnels and rooms had been chiseled out of the underground rocks. Our room had been carved out, high enough to stand up in and move around comfortably.`

Now they say various things and make statements that could only made by lunatics. We hope that they would regain their senses within two-three months and then they would be ashamed of what they have said and done,` Weerawansa told The Island yesterday.

Sri Lankan names cause Italian computers to break down Tuesday, 25 December 2007 - 10:53 AM SL Time December 15 was `D Day` for most Sri Lankans living in Italy, Sri Lanka and elsewhere, who had always dreamt of working in Italy. The Italian government, having considered the representations made by the Embassy for Sri Lanka in Italy, increased the quota of jobs for Sri Lanka to 3,500. The immigration authorities also made some changes in the application format. Last year, the applications were received from Sri Lankans and their sponsors at the Post Offices in Italy where thousands queued up in the bitter cold days before the appointed date. This year, in order to avoid scenes outside post offices, the Italian government decided to accept applications through the internet. The website is in Italian and the applications were to be tendered by Italian sponsors, who had declared a minimum income of 800 Euros a month. This was a clear indication that Sri Lankans living outside Italy had little or no chance of applying for these visas. Sri Lanka`s Ambassador Hemantha Warnakulasuriya forewarned Sri Lankans not to get duped by crafty job agents, who are supposedly charging astronomical fees from gullible people on the pretext of obtaining job permits under this scheme.

What can`t be cured must be endured? Wednesday, 26 December 2007 - 11:05 AM SL Time Parliament has become something like a pond infested with frogs during monsoon rains. It is full of croaking and leaps. The bush telegraph has it that some more political jumps are likely to happen in the next few weeks. The incidence of crossovers is so high that JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa recently made a tongue-in-cheek request in the House that an electronic board be put up at the entrance to Parliament indicating the strength of the Opposition and the government each day! A wag says it will have to be updated every hour, if not every minute, on the day of a crucial vote. However, political pole-vaulting has apparently come to be taken for granted and turncoats are going great guns. Today, our main news item says Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara has told a private television channel that he sees nothing wrong with defections. Owing to the Proportional Representation System that brings about weak governments, crossovers have become the order of the day and the Speaker seems to be going by the old adage: `What can`t be cured must be endured.`

Some Christmas thoughts Tuesday, 25 December 2007 - 11:06 AM SL Time It never rains but it pours! Floods have displaced thousands of people and destroyed hundreds of houses. Some bridges have given way and many roads are still under water. The flood level continues to rise in some areas aggravating the suffering of the victims. Eight districts have been badly hit. Wrath of weather gods seems to know no bounds. In the North, the military and the LTTE are girding up their loins for what is considered an imminent showdown. Skirmishes have already begun. People in the other parts of the country are living in fear of deadly bomb attacks. There seems to be no end in sight to the natural and man-made disasters! It is against this backdrop that Christmas is celebrated today. Joy and sorrow, as is the way with life, exist cheek by jowl. After today`s celebrations comes tomorrow`s commemoration of those who perished in the Boxing Day tsunami, the worst ever natural disaster this country has experienced.

No room for the president Sunday, 23 December 2007 - 1:26 PM SL Time The Sunday Island scoop last week, ``No room on the UL flight for President Rajapaksa,`` necessitating a special Mihin Lanka flight out of Luton raised the predictable storm and we were treated last week to an unfolding drama of the BOI requesting the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to withdraw the work visa of SriLankan`s British CEO, Peter Hill. Emirates which manage UL has said they will not appoint a new CEO suggesting that Hill will run the airline from Dubai at least until the management agreement between that airline and Sri Lanka`s national carrier ends in March. With negotiations for renewing what many regard as an unequal agreement now on, the shadow boxing is not only unpleasant but can prove detrimental to the national interest.

Australia prepare `sickly` for Test Wednesday, 26 December 2007 - 11:04 AM SL Time The Australian cricket team`s preparation for the first test against India beginning Wednesday was sideswiped by criticism from former players. Vice captain Adam Gilchrist says his side is `a little bit sick` of it. Retired leg spinner Shane Warne and ex-Australia captain Ian Chappell criticized former national coach John Buchanan in newspaper stories over the past several days. Both have been critical of Buchanan in the past, and Chappell said on the weekend that his daughter might have done a better job of leading the Australian team. Last week, Warne said Australian cricket was in danger of becoming arrogant and he labeled Buchanan as `a goose.`

Rain frustrates Sri Lanka, likely to save England Sunday, 23 December 2007 - 1:29 PM SL Time Heavy rains continued to frustrate Sri Lanka in their attempt to win the third and final Test match against the touring England team on the penultimate day at the reconstructed Galle International Stadium yesterday. Sri Lanka are looking to wrap up the series two nil following their success in the opening Test in Kandy and move into the second place of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test Championship Team Rankings. A light shower forced the players to return back into the dressing room with England struggling to survive on 102 for 1 in their second innings at the break after being forced to follow on. The downpour then further increased in intensity during the lunch interval with covers placed across the whole ground. The rains eased at around 1.00 p.m and there was a moment when the ground staff started to pull the covers off. But then again the rains returned to the Galle Stadium getting even heavier there after.

Sri Lanka slaughter hopeless England Friday, 21 December 2007 - 1:31 PM SL Time We thought England were here to play Test cricket, but their efforts on the third day`s play of the third and final Test Match here at the Galle International Cricket Stadium gives you the impression that this is a bunch of schoolboys, impatient to get back home for Christmas. So hopeless were England yesterday that it took Sri Lanka only two and half hours to run through them in the first innings as England were bowled out for 81 runs, their worst in Tests against Sri Lanka and after the hosts inserted the follow on reached two without loss in the second innings before bad light intervened. England have a massive task at their hands as they need another huge 416 to avoid innings defeat. This also must be the worst English team to have set their feet on Sri Lankan soil. They were lackluster on the field when Sri Lanka were batting yesterday morning while their batting lacked application and the comical running between the wickets added for the drama and Sri Lankan fans were having fun at the expense of the tourists. Some of those several dropped catches cost them dearly too. England`s policy to play a wicketkeeper who could bat had hurt them in earlier instances and if only Matt Prior had held onto those three chances the score line would have been different.
