Pakistan`s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday outside a large gathering of her supporters where a suicide bomber also killed at least 22, doctors and a spokesman for her party said.
While Bhutto appeared to have died from bullet wounds, it was not immediately clear if she was shot or if her wounds were caused by bomb shrapnel.
President Pervez Musharraf held an emergency meeting in the hours after the death, according to state media.
Mahmud Ali Durrani, Pakistan ambassador to the United States, said Musharraf will be `announcing something` soon, likely to include a declaration of national mourning for Bhutto. He said that when he briefly spoke with Musharraf, the president `condemned these attacks.`
Police warned citizens to stay home as they expected rioting to break out in city streets in reaction to the death.
Rioters burned tires and blocked roads in Karachi and other cities, police sources said. Police fired on an angry mob, killing two people, in the city of Khairpur in the Sindh province, Geo TV reported.
Police sources told CNN the bomber, who was riding a motorcycle, blew himself up near Bhutto`s vehicle.

When one has a different ideology you kill him/her. That is the terrorist ideology. It is no different for Benazir or for the EPDP paper distribution van. Terrorism is the cancer of modern society.

Benazir Bhutto Assassination - I condemn an attack on a woman by the Muslim fundamentalist. This is going to get worse in the region because of power struggle and corruption.
Possible culprits:
1. Musharaff
2. Extremist in the Army
3. Taleeban / Al Quida
4. Indian Intelligence Service
5. Pakistani Intelligence Service
All these groups have some motive to kill Ms Bhutto.
My instinct says ' Indian Intelligence Service'

My condolence goes to the Bhuttos family.
USA is responsible for the creation of Taliban. It was CIA that closely worked with Pakistani government to support Taliban to topple the Soviet backed Afgan government. It is also the USA that support Musharraf for his undemocratic acts like interfering with the court decisions to suppress Pakistani people. Finally they brought Benazir but it was too late. That is why this happened. What I believe.

Bhutto criticized extremist Muslim terrorists in public just like Kadiragamar. she did that while in the opposition.
Lucky CBK!! escaped but lost an eye.
This is the penalty of criticizing terrorits.

Pakistan is in a state of anarchy and anyone who attempts to democratise the country at the present time will fail miserably.
There are so many factions - religious, tribal, regional and political- that even the military govt of Musharraf failed to control even with the help of many western powers.
If the military couldn't control the country I don't think any democratic politician could. Nawaz Sharif must be shaking in his boots.
I am sure India had some hand in this assassination. An unstable Pakistan will strengthen Indian hegemony over the region. It will also weaken Pakistan's foothold in Sri Lanka which has become an irritant for India lately.
