Breakaway Sri Lanka Tiger leader to be investigated in UK for war crimes, report says
Friday, 21 December 2007 - 1:28 PM SL Time

Breakaway rebel leader Karuna Amman who is living in the United Kingdom now is to be investigated for possible war crimes, a British daily The Times said in a report today.

Karuna was the former Batticaloa - Ampara district commander of the LTTE and the leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), the political party he formed after leaving LTTE in 2003.

Human rights groups have accused Karuna and his armed group of serious atrocities including extrajudicial killings, torture and abductions of civilians and recruiting child soldiers. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has accused Karuna of killing local journalists who oppose his point of view.

Karuna has categorically denied these allegations in interviews claiming the LTTE is trying to discredit his party.

The Crown Prosecution Service is looking into whether there is sufficient evidence to bring him to trial under international laws on war crimes, torture and hostage-taking, the Times report said.

`Col.` Karuna who was arrested on November 2nd for traveling on a forged passport has reportedly entered Britain on a genuine Sri Lanka diplomatic passport and with a British entry visa. Sri Lankan media reported that the visa was obtained from the British High Commission in Colombo on a third person note sent by the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry.

Karuna has requested political asylum in Britain after his arrest.

The Sri Lankan army soldiers helped Karuna and other paramilitaries to commit Human Rights violations. He was with the LTTE formerly. Now due to pressure exerted and to ensure his own survival has exposed both sources of crimes against Humanity. The Rajapakse Government claimed high moral graound which has been shattered.

After days of hesitation, SL High Commission has denied any involvement in either
1. Issuing Forged Diplomatic passport and
2. Duping British High Commission into issuing diplomatic visa
to Kokila Gunawardene

British Government is free to prosecute this traitor for crimes against humanity. Civilians of all communities suffered enough and he must be punished, Karma is at work.

Noose is getting tightened around MR's and VP's necks.

'Concern' over ex-rebel passport
Col Karuna, a former Tamil Tiger commander in Sri Lanka
Col Karuna was once second-in-command in the Tamil Tigers
The Foreign Office has 'expressed concern' to Sri Lanka over a false diplomatic passport issued to an ex-Tamil Tiger rebel leader.

A spokesman said the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in London was told on 17 December of concern about the passport issued to Colonel Karuna Amman.

The government had previously declined to confirm that Col Karuna allegedly entered the UK under false pretences.

Unless Karuna is prosecuted SL Government will hide behind governmental protocol. The VIP treatment given to Nazi Pinochet enabled others to expose his crimes against humanity. SL govt cannot be allowed to get away with colossal inhuman treatment of a people even if they are Tamils.

Then we will demand that MR also be tried for war crimes at the Interantional Court of Justice.
