Basil attempts through English media to prevent Thondaman from crossover

Basil Rajapaksa is engaged in a childish attempt through local English-language newspapers to influence the stance of CWC's Arumugam Thondaman and other minority party politicians to minimize the impact from a terrible defeat for the Rajapaksa Brothers' budget at the vote on its third reading tomorrow, a top official of the Jathika Sabha told 'Lanka Dissent.' Today's issue of the Sinhala-language 'Divaina' quoted JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa as saying that the position of his party was unlikely to change at the vote.
However, its sister English paper 'The Island' had reported, at the instigation of Basil Rajapaksa, that Weerawansa had said, 'We don't think there is still any need for changing our position. But, after taking into consideration all the developments in the run up to the crucial vote, we will make a final decision.'
The JVP's decision tomorrow will be crucial for both the government and the opposition. Hence, all interest on developments in the JVP ranks and statements by its leaders.
Most media attempted today to get comments from the JVP in the aftermath of yesterday's crossover to the opposition by four SLMC MPs, led by party leader Rauff Hakeem.
Another JVP strongman Anura Kumara Dissanayake told 'Lankadeepa', 'It is the same vote on the 14th as on the 19th. This budget is a failure. It answers issues of the 109 ministers and does not give solutions to people's grievances. Rs. 9,600 million goes for the Samurdhi allowance while the ministers get Rs. 23,000 million. An unbelievable tax burden has been placed on the people. Without a proper economic vision, money has been allocated for wasteful, fraudulent activities that take the country to ruin. The budget also proposes to curtail Rs. 84,000 million paid by the people as VAT. We received a tremendous response from the people for preventing this wasteful, fraudulent journey by the government through our decision on the 19th. Therefore, the JVP has nothing to change on the 14th.'
JVP MP K.D. Lalkantha, who is also a trade union leader, told 'Lankadeepa' that his party has not changed its stance on the budget.
Pointing out that the JVP has been opposing the budget all this while, he added that various comedies were taking place in the political arena, with the patriots in the past now becoming traitors.
We're not prepared to protect this govt.' ' JVP's Lalkantha

'This government is unstable. This government has collapsed. The JVP is not prepared to protect this government,' JVP parliamentarian and trade unionist K.D. Lalkantha told V FM Radio in a live interview a short while ago. Lalkantha said further, 'We have been telling the government that giving ministerial portfolios is futile. The government cannot be made stable by increasing its headcount. What we have been saying all this while has now proved correct.'
'The government is unstable. The government has collapsed. Our position on the budget has not changed. We do not want to protect this government. We do not want to protect Mahinda Rajapaksa. We do not want to protect Ranil either. We want to protect the people. That is our responsibility. We will fulfill that responsibility. We stress that we do not want to protect this government, Mahinda Rajapaksa or Ranil Wickremesinghe,' he added.
