Carbon Footprint For Dummies From a Dummy
Sunday, 9 December 2007 - 10:24 PM SL Time

Carbon footprint
-----------------
A carbon footprint is a `measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide`[1] It is meant to be useful for individuals and organizations to conceptualize their personal (or organizational) impact in contributing to global warming. A conceptual tool in response to carbon footprints are carbon offsets, or the mitigation of carbon emissions through the development of alternative projects such as solar or wind energy or reforestation. A carbon footprint can be seen as a subset of earlier uses of the concept of ecological footprints. The average UK carbon footprint is 9.4 Tonnes Per Person.

Defining a Carbon Footprint
===========================
The carbon footprint can be seen as the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service. Normally a carbon footprint is usually expressed as a CO2 equivalent (usually in kilogrammes or tonnes), which accounts for the same global warming effects of different greenhouse gases (UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology POST, 2006). Carbon footprints can be calculated using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, or can be restricted to the immediately attributable emissions from energy use of fossil fuels.

Fortunately, Sri Lanka is still in the Green Zone.

But, so many vehicles on the road mean we don't hold into what we have for a long time.

Imelds,
Well, I'll give it a shot.....
Your carbon footprint is the sum of all emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), which were induced by your activities in a given time frame. Usually a carbon footprint is calculated for the time period of a year.

AnuD,

Fortunately, Sri Lanka is still in the Green Zone.

Tha map only shows the 'per capita' emmission....lets say we are not that industrialized!

Aunty Emily,
I say go for reforestation!!
