Lanka-e-News, 2007 December 05, 2007: Former Internal Defense Minister John Amarathunga says that people have become helpless since the security of the country is collapsed.

He said that the security situation has dilapidated to the level that the counties like Australia, UK and US have issued travel warnings and directives not to carry money because of thefts. He said at a press briefing in Colombo today that this has given adverse international publicity to Sri Lanka.

MP Amarathunga pointed out that the number of crimes recorded in 2006 were 61,000 while the figure up to 2007 September was 42,479. He quoted MP T. Maheswaran's statement in the parliament that six persons are killed in Jaffna each day. MP Amarathunga said that Police lacks time to engage in crime suppression as they are deployed for the security of VIPs.

He said that bombs are placed where opposition holds meetings. A bomb was found today from Kiribathgoda and people are in fear to come to a town to purchase day to day necessities. The MP asked if investors would come in this context.

MP Amarathunga said that the fact that a bomb was placed near MP Sivajilingam's house situated inside a well guarded high security zone proved that the Government was behind them.
