Air force destroys Tamil Tigers` satellite communications center
Sunday, 25 November 2007 - 10:03 PM SL Time
Tamilnet says bombers attacked a civilian settlement twice

Sri Lankan fighter jets bombed and destroyed a satellite communications center run by Tamil Tiger rebels in their northern stronghold Sunday, an air force spokesman said. The rebels said that the air raid killed three civilians, and that three others died in a bomb blast.

Air force spokesman Group Capt. Ajantha Silva said the communications center, in a village near the rebels` de facto capital of Kilinochchi, was used to communicate and coordinate with rebel agents overseas.

But the Tamil Tigers said in a statement that the air force had bombed a civilian area in Kilinochchi, killing three people and wounding seven more.

Military agents also crossed into rebel territory and planted a roadside bomb that killed three more civilians in Oddusuddan, a village southeast of Kilinochchi, the rebel statement said.

Sri Lanka`s ban on TRO `final nail` in coffin of peace process
Saturday, 24 November 2007 - 1:25 PM SL Time
Tamilnet
The Tamils Rehabilitation Organisations (TRO) has condemned the Sri Lankan government`s banning of the charity, saying the Rajapakse regime had done so with the `ulterior motive of unleashing untold hardships on the Tamil people as part of [the government`s] continuing discrimination and oppression of the Tamil people.` The TRO, which has been the largest - and for long periods the sole - NGO assisting the hundreds of thousands of Tamils displaced by the conflict, said in a statement this week `With the banning of the TRO the final nail in the coffin of the peace process has been hammered home.`

`It is a tragedy that the International Community, while ignoring the human rights abuses and violation of international humanitarian law by the GoSL, continues to dangle this `dead peace`, that the GoSL continues to show no interest in pursuing, before the Tamil people,` the TRO said.

The President has expressed his position earlier today at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kampala, Uganda.

Sri Lanka bans TRO
Thursday, 22 November 2007 - 12:46 PM SL Time
Sri Lanka`s government is to outlaw a charity believed to be a front organisation for separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, media minister Anura Yapa said Thursday.

Ministers met Wednesday and decided to proscribe the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) whose bank accounts were frozen by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka last year, he said.

`The cabinet decided yesterday to ban the TRO and also ask other governments to do the same,` Yapa said.

The United States last week froze TRO assets after accusing the charity of providing financial support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam at home.

The US Treasury designated the TRO a group that raises money for the rebels which Washington branded a terrorist organisation from October 1997.

UNP hits out at President
Wednesday, 21 November 2007 - 7:29 AM SL Time
The main opposition UNP yesterday charged that the move to omit budgetary estimates for more 30 institutions coming directly under President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the committee stage of the debate on the budget was illegal.

UNP frontliner Lakshman Kiriella who started the debate in parliament said `this illegal act` had been committed by the President who he said was elected to office through fraudulent means preventing nearly 300,000 people from exercising their franchise at the election.

However, Mr. Kiriella charged that the President`s allocation had been increased by Rs. 2,500 million.

`There are over 100 consultants working for the President. He was elected through illegal means. How can we expect him to work legally then?` he queried. The House debated the vote on the President`s office, Prime Minister`s office and National Building and Infrastructure Development Ministry.

Budget failed to solve people`s problems - UNP
Wednesday, 21 November 2007 - 7:25 AM SL Time
Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera, opening the debate on the Budget 2008, in Parliament yesterday, said the government had failed to address the crucial problems facing the people with the cost of living reaching the highest ever levels making the people reel under its burden.

Though the government had promised an increased cost of living allowance to the public sector they were given only a paltry increase of 375 rupees while costs had increased beyond their reach. The Budget has not provided any relief for the common people.

He said the UNP had expected the government to give some relief to the people but the Budget was only a document playing on words and statistics putting the people further into trouble. Therefore, the UNP would vote against it.

Hold Bogollagama to account
Sunday, 25 November 2007 - 7:41 AM SL Time
Nobody would object if Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama chooses to daub egg on his own face. But doing that on the face of the country, as he did in going along with the consensus in a Commonwealth foreign minister`s conclave now on in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, that Pakistan be suspended from that club of former British colonies is totally unacceptable. The government, shown up by its minister`s action, as an ingrate to a country we are deeply beholden, has tried to apply plaster to the injury ex post facto and subsequently recorded our dissent from the suspension decision of the majority. Perhaps the broken fence has been mended to Pakistan`s satisfaction and those in the corridors of power may be patting themselves on their collective back that they have come out of a tricky corner. But many questions remain to be answered.

Arrogance of power never pays
Friday, 23 November 2007 - 10:44 PM SL Time
Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara is reported to have requested that ministers be present in the House to answer oral questions from the members. It is not only ministers who scoot away. Unless there is a crucial vote, Parliament looks just like a government office?almost deserted. It is not seldom that the quorum bell goes off. `Old habits die hard,` one may say on seeing this sad state of affairs. They who play hooky as children grow up to be confirmed malingerers. The deteriorating standards of parliamentary debates and the despicable conduct of some politicians are also indicative of the fact that they used to play truant in their formative years. The same goes for all other representatives in Provincial Councils etc.

This country where nearly one half of the population languishes in abject poverty expends a great deal of funds to maintain the so-called people`s representatives, who number well over 4,000 in all elected bodies. Kick a wayside bush at random, they say, and several politicians will be thrown out. They are multiplying like rabbits and living off the people, like leeches. Parliamentarians draw fat salaries by Sri Lankan standards and enjoy many perks such duty free vehicle import permits and pension rights within the first five years in office. The cost of maintaining Parliament is extremely high, especially when it is in session. Besides, as we reported a few weeks ago, a large amount of food goes to waste in the Parliament canteens day in day out, while many people go to sleep on empty stomachs and over 30 per cent of children remain malnourished.

Hooded eunuchs running amuck
Thursday, 22 November 2007 - 12:53 PM SL Time
It is with shock and dismay that we note the dastardly attack on the Leader Publications printing press at Ratmalana yesterday. An unidentified group stormed the place, held the production staff incommunicado at gun point and set the machinery on fire. That cowardly act of terrorism must be condemned unreservedly by one and all.

On a number of occasions in the past, Editor-in-chief of the Leader Publications Lasantha Wickremetunge came under attack. In one incident, he and his wife were roughed up by thugs. Later a grenade was lobbed at his residence. The Sunday Leader was also sealed under President Chandrika Kumaratunga`s regime. Its printing press was set on fire in 2005 in the run-up to the last Presidential Election. Lasantha and the Morning Leader Editor Sonali Samarasinghe have complained of threats to their lives during the past few years.

Tharanga, Sujeewa and Bandara included in Test squad
Sunday, 25 November 2007 - 7:41 AM SL Time
The biggest question of the Sri Lankan team after the Australian tour was who would fill the vacancy created by Marvan Atapattu who announced his retirement after the Hobart Test. Sri Lankan selectors seem to have sorted out the problem by including the former opener Upul Tharanga in Sri Lanka`s squad for the first Test at Kandy starting on December 1.

Upul Tharanga was one of the three batsmen who scored centuries in the SLC Board President`s XI match against England this week. While Tharanga`s century has earned him a place in the squad, Chamara Kapugedara who top scored with 141 runs and Thilina Kandamby who came up with an unbeaten 107 runs have failed to find a place in the 14 member squad.

Leg spinner Malinga Bandara and left arm paceman Sujeewa de Silva are named in the squad, while Thilakaratne Dilshan who failed to score in the practice match has failed to find a place Thilan Samaraweera has been dropped.

SL to meet defending champions before world cup
Friday, 23 November 2007 - 10:41 PM SL Time
Sri Lanka will meet last year semifinalists Australia and minnows Nepal and Namibia in Group C in the first round when the ICC Under-19 World Cup commence in Malaysia in February.

Though Sri Lanka have met India, Bangladesh, England and hosts Malaysia in preparatory tournaments during the past one year they have not met any of their Group C counterparts after the last World Cup. But Ashley de Silva, the Manager of the Sri Lanka Under-19 team was optimistic that the team can gain much needed exposure when they meet England and defending champions Pakistan in a pre World Cup tournament in January.

`Pakistan and India are the toughest teams in the tournament. We have met India in a tournament. And we will be meeting England and Pakistan in a tournament in January and that will give youngsters an opportunity to get exposure,` said Ashley.

Sangakkara robbed of history as Aussies win
Wednesday, 21 November 2007 - 7:32 AM SL Time
Rudi Koertzen, one of most senior umpires in the elite panel of world cricket, brought justice in the game to zero level making a mess of the end of the second and final cricket Test which gave Australia a 93-run win over Sri Lanka here at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart yesterday.

With Sri Lanka destined more to lose than win at 364 for 8, Koertzen, a South African, barged into the picture to upstage the day as he ruled a history-seeking Kumar Sangakkara out caught by Ricky Ponting in the slips to a ball that hit the batsman on the arm and helmet.

As a dejected Sangakkara walked away, Koetzen`s integrity and Ponting gamesmanship came into inevitable questioning. It brought into focus the inability of batsmen to seek justice from the men who are supposed to safeguard the rules of fair-play but instead made sacred cows by the International Cricket Council with nothing more to learn.
