Moby1975,
I got to know this young American soldier at a dental clinic I trained in for several months (about a year ago in the States). This guy had served in Iraq. I once asked him what it was about the Iraqi insurgents that was giving them so much trouble in Iraq? On the surface these insurgents seemed to have nothing compared to the immense and sophisticated firepower of the Americans. So why weren't the Americans able to neutralize those relatively few insurgents?
He said the answer boiled down to this. Every Iraqi insurgent was prepared to lay down his life for the cause. In his view that makes the ultimate soldier. You can understand that for the American soldier in Iraq, their's was simply a job. Often times, the younger fellahs were in Iraq as part of a plan to put them selves through school (uni). I don't know if you know this, after two years of active service in the armed forces Americans can get their uni tuition paid for.
I write this because there are important parallels to the situation between Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam. I think when your enemy is prepared to die for what they believe in, then you have a fundamentally different equation in a war situation.
