Tharanga, Sujeewa and Bandara included in Test squad
Sunday, 25 November 2007 - 7:41 AM SL Time

The biggest question of the Sri Lankan team after the Australian tour was who would fill the vacancy created by Marvan Atapattu who announced his retirement after the Hobart Test. Sri Lankan selectors seem to have sorted out the problem by including the former opener Upul Tharanga in Sri Lanka`s squad for the first Test at Kandy starting on December 1.

Upul Tharanga was one of the three batsmen who scored centuries in the SLC Board President`s XI match against England this week. While Tharanga`s century has earned him a place in the squad, Chamara Kapugedara who top scored with 141 runs and Thilina Kandamby who came up with an unbeaten 107 runs have failed to find a place in the 14 member squad.

Leg spinner Malinga Bandara and left arm paceman Sujeewa de Silva are named in the squad, while Thilakaratne Dilshan who failed to score in the practice match has failed to find a place Thilan Samaraweera has been dropped.

Bandara`s inclusion will give Sri Lanka the option of operating with two spinners.

Sujeewa de Silva joins established pace trio of Chaminda Vaas who is on 99 Test caps, Dilhara Fernando and Lasith Malinga. Farveez Maharoof was ruled out from the tour after getting injured in the Hobart Test.

Squad: Mahela Jayawardene (Captain), Kumar Sangakkara (V. Captain), Sanath Jayasuriya, Upul Tharanga, Michael Vandort, Chamara Silva, Jehan Mubarak, Prasanna Jayawardane, Muttiah Muralidaran, Chaminda Vaas, Dilhara Fernando, Lasith Malinga, Malinga Bandara, Sujeewa Silva

Upul Tharanga will be definitely in the line up at Kandy as an opener, has scored a fine 86 today in the second practice game against the Englishmen.

Surprised to note of Dilshan's omission however since the current squad named is only for the 1st test, he could still come into the reckoning in case Chamara fails.

Tharanga is to sri lanka's batting line up what dilhara is to its bowling attack...a loose cannon. time will prove me right. we need solid performers. where are they?!

I think Kappugadara should be given a chance. He is celarly very talented, and a good option for replacing Jayasuriya when he retires. So he should be given more match practise.

Kapugedera is a talented cricketer but Malintha Warnapura is a better player than him, he might be the guy who will get the nod if..........

Tharanga should definitely play. He has already proven his worth. He has a test average of around 30 after 13 matches and a ODI average of around 32 after 65 innings. He is a stroke player and a naturally aggressive striker of the ball. Certainly someone who Sanga has helped to develop and you can see that in some of his off side stroke play. He is the future, someone who can step in where Atapattu left off. Not selecting Dilshan is a huge blunder, he should be selected for his electric fielding. He was sorely missed in the field in Aus where a number of run out opportunities and catches went abegging.

Tharanga should be there, no other choose. They should have Dilshan in the team. What selectors are doing with Mubarak??? still getting good money.

I hope Mahela lets him get those 3 wickets he needs to get 100.

Tharanga should play - he is the best available opener to slot in for Atapattu.

Dilshan should be in the side - he is a very useful all rounder who can bat in the middle order, bowl and is a gun fielder.

I also think Sujeewa Silva might be worth a look for bowling. vassy will be retiring soon and we have to build up some new blood to take his spot.

Imp,

It will also depend on the team composition as well in case Sri Lanka play 02 spinners, then Sanath will be hardly called upon to operate.
