Sri Lanka President objects to suspension of Pakistan from Commonwealth
Friday, 23 November 2007 - 10:38 PM SL Time

A media release by the policy research and information unit of the Presidential Secretariat today said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has expressed strong objections of Sri Lanka at the decision taken to suspend Pakistan from membership of the 53-nation Commonwealth.

The President has expressed his position earlier today at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kampala, Uganda.

The Media release said `when President Yoweri Museveni, who is the Chairman of the CHOGM, asked for the view of Heads of Government to the decision taken by the relevant committee to suspend Pakistan from the Commonwealth in view of current developments there. It was the view of President Rajapaksa that due consideration should be given to the changes that were now taking place in Pakistan before such an important decision is taken regarding a member of the Commonwealth.`

The media release also said that the President`s decision is in keeping with a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers held today, which reiterated an earlier decision that Sri Lanka should stand by Pakistan.

The Commonwealth suspended Pakistan`s membership on Thursday, after President Pervez Musharraf failed to meet a deadline to lift a three-week-old state of emergency and step down as army chief.

Here's another version

Pakistan lauds Sri Lanka's opposition to Commonwealth suspension

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan Friday welcomed Sri Lanka's stand which opposed Islamabad's suspension from the Commonwealth.

Sri Lanka and Malaysia objected to the Commonwealth's decision to suspend emergency-ruled Pakistan, according to reports.

'The government of Pakistan appreciates the decision of the government of Sri Lanka to disassociate itself from the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG)'s decision to suspend Pakistan from the councils of the Commonwealth,' the Pakistani foreign ministry said in a statement.

'Sri Lanka is a member of CMAG and its foreign minister, who represented his country at the CMAG meeting, urged the Commonwealth to send a delegation to Pakistan to assess the ground situation rather than taking the hasty decision of suspending Pakistan's membership. Pakistan itself had proposed such a visit to CMAG member countries,' it said.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse expressed 'strong objections of Sri Lanka at the decision taken to suspend Pakistan from membership of the Commonwealth at the Commonwealth heads of government meeting', Rajapakse's office said in a statement in Colombo.

Pakistan Friday regretted the Commonwealth decision and said that the body had ignored ground realities in the country.

However, Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon Friday defended the organization's decision and said that there had been differences within the nine-country ministerial committee that decided to suspend Pakistan.

Sripathi wants president to probe Kadirgamar killing
Chief Coordinator of the SLFP Mahajana Wing Sripathi Sooriyarachchi sent a letter today (Nov. 22nd) regarding the murder of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar more than two years ago.

The letter says, ?A majority of the SLFP was of the opinion that Lakshman Kadirgamar should be appointed prime minister after the general elections in April 2004.?

?Accordingly, the JVP, as a key affiliate of the government, wrote to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, asking her to appoint Kadirgamar to the position.?

Sooriyarachchi notes in his letter that the late Foreign Minister was instrumental in getting international opinion of Sri Lanka as a country of barbaric communalists changed and also exposed the true face of the LTTE.?

?At the 2005 presidential polls, Kadirgamar had been playing a key role, when he was assassinated.?

?His killing was a blessing in disguise for you,? the SLFP (M) Chief Coordinator told the President in the letter.

He goes on to say, ?I exposed the link between the LTTE agent Charles Gnanakone and this assassination. Subsequently, he was arrested and an investigation began during the office of President Kumaratunga.?

However, just a week after you took up office as president, Gnanakone along with 15 other LTTE suspects, were freed under mysterious circumstances.

?It is strange that the case remains pending for nearly two years with the perpetrators still at large.?

Describing Kadirgamar as a very rare Sri Lankan, Sooriyarachchi requests the President to appoint a commission of inquiry to probe his death and the freeing of Gnanakone and punish those responsible.
