Sri Lanka`s government is to outlaw a charity believed to be a front organisation for separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, media minister Anura Yapa said Thursday.
Ministers met Wednesday and decided to proscribe the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) whose bank accounts were frozen by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka last year, he said.
`The cabinet decided yesterday to ban the TRO and also ask other governments to do the same,` Yapa said.
The United States last week froze TRO assets after accusing the charity of providing financial support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam at home.
The US Treasury designated the TRO a group that raises money for the rebels which Washington branded a terrorist organisation from October 1997.
The US embassy here alleged the TRO, which says it is a charity, helped the LTTE buy munitions, equipment, communication devices and other technology in the US.
The Tigers are leading a campaign for independence for the Tamil minority in this majority Sinhalese nation that has left tens of thousands dead since 1972.
No date was announced for the ban to come into force but cabinet decisions usually take about a week to be ratified.

Ban or no ban....the TRO should be dismantled piece by piece and held responsible when there are war crimes tribunals once the LTTE are defeated wlonside Velu and his gangsters.
whether you are tamil, sinhala or muslim...there's one thing that you have to remember: the majority of the population in Lanka are sinhala and buddhist. Just get over it. If the sinhala fellows really wanted to hurt us bad, all they had to do was implement a 'Bhumi-putra' type practice in Lanka or wipe us out from the southern areas and we'll all be in the the LTTE ghetto the Wanni! We have taken for granted that we are in Lanka at the leave and licence of the majority and we have no special claim to any part of the land over other inhabitants. We are all equal and have equal rights. Discrimination? Please dont use that polluted word again. We have chief justices, appealate court judges, foreign ministers, provincial governors, heads of professional bodies (eg. OPA, Bar Association, Medical Association, etc) and heads of blue chip companies from our race. We have had tamil political parties which have mono-ethnic representation for years, but the sinhala-only party was created only recently. The last King of Lanka was one of ours but he took a sinhala name and became a buddhist. There have been others before him who did that. Discrinination??? Pleez!! Not all tamils are blinded by these lies. You cant fool ALL the people ALL the time! |

I'm sure TRO would've done some genuine work to help tamil in those conflict areas but at the same time can you deny the fact they have been working for the LTTE????
