Aiyyo paw Blake mahaththayata....

He Huffed and He Puffed, but He Couldn't Bring Down the House...

COLOMBO, SinhalaNet 2007.11.21 04:43PM
It is understood that U.S. Ambassador Robert Blake had blamed Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP strongman Ravi Karunayake for their failure to prevent the Government from passing the budget on Monday (Nov. 19) with a majority vote.

The ambassador at an earlier meeting with the two of them at Wickremesinghe's Cambridge Terrace residence had discussed the possibility of buying MPs to help the Opposition and promised assistance in the matter.

After the voting in Parliament an embassy staffer of the Political Section had phoned the U.S. envoy of the developments in the House.

Earlier the local press (without identifying the ambassador) reported 'highly placed sources' as saying that the Sri Lanka Government is contemplating tough action against him for assisting the Opposition to engineer defections from the government. According to this report the envoy had stayed at Wickremesinghe's (also not identified) residence as late as 2.00 a.m. and made a number of telephone calls to local politicians in the bid to entice a group of government MPs to cross over to the Opposition before the crucial vote in Parliament.

Poor Puffing Blake. Lucky America has better Brains than you.

Desmond Fernando writes to ICJ on threats to MPs
President?s Counsel Desmond Fernando has brought the attention of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) to recent deaths received by opposition parliamentarians in Sri Lanka.

Fernando, who is a past Vice President of the ICJ, has written to the Secretary General of the international body Nicholas Howen, about the ?very serious situation? faced especially by Tamil MPs.

Claiming that the past two years had seen a near total collapse of the vibrant democracy the country had enjoyed since post-independence, Fernando alleges that racist groups dominating the present regime are preventing it from protecting all citizens, particularly parliamentarians.

MPs Jayalath Jayawardena, G. Ponnambalam, S. Gajendran, S. Jeyanandamoorthi, S. Kishore, T. Kanagasabe, K. Pathmanathan, T. Kathiraman, P. Ariyanethran and C. Chandranehru are under threat, he says.

Fernando claims to having credible information that the government had used paramilitary groups to kidnap the son-in-law of MP Kanagasabe to prevent him from voting against the budget on November 19th.

Expressing deep concern over the manner in which the government is harassing elected representatives of the Tamil community, he charges that the working of parliamentary democracy is in serious jeopardy due to the use of violence.

Foreign Governments must stop meddling in the internal affairs on an independent country, however much it's in poverty.

US must stop interfering in the govt affairs or even in the problem ofethnic community.

If US stops proscribing LTTE and follow what it did in the case of IRA we can resolve the problem ourselves. They should not tie somebofy's hand and let the opponents fight it out. It will be favourable to one party.
