(LeN, Nov. 20, 6.45 PM) The Government has instructed the authorities to thoroughly investigate the political affiliations of those who are recruited as the home guards in Hambanthota district.

The Government is currently recruiting 1000 home guards to provide security to the villages bordering to Yala. The authorities have been instructed to limit the number of recruitments from Hambanthota and Thissamaharama areas.

The joint investigations by Police and Army have found that anti-Government elements were behind the killings at Ranminithenna and Yala.

When Lanka-e-News enquired about the recruitment process from the Director of the Civil Defense Force Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara, he said that youth would be recruited as home guards from threatened villages in Hambanthota and Monaragala districts as well as other areas. Some would be selected from Thissa area but would be deployed in other areas based on the intelligence reports, he said.

Army Commander Sarath Fonseka revealed that an anti-Government force conducted the killings in Raninithenna and Yala with the assistance of the LTTE to achieve political mileage. He said that he had received a copy of the secret investigation report.

UNP MP Gayantha Karunathilaka says that the only savior for the Government is Prabakaran whom the Government takes cover to increase prices and impose new taxes. The budget win is also depicted as a loss to the Tigers and Elephants. JVP too will be tagged as Tiger accomplices.

Karunathilaka said that all these showed the weakness of the Government and the fall of this unstable Government could be at the coming third reading of the budget.

..Though the LTTE had been able to tenaciously hold on to its forward defended localities west of Omanthai and in Muhamalai-Nagarkovil area, the security forces operations in the area has prevented the LTTE from taking any initiative.
