Pharaoh:

this war is about the East. Why do you think so many people have been driven out of Sampur for fake high security zones

Reason is simple. Sampoor is not for farmland. Trinco harbor is very important both militarily and commercially. Govt will do anything safeguard Trinco.

On the other hand, anyone who is affected by the HSZ, must be compensated accordingly. THat is the duty of the govt.

You are greatly mistaken if this war is done to capture farmland.

Do you still have relatives in the east?

yes I do have some still there, but how much longer they wil stay there is a big question. many fled in the 90s and came to Colombo and abroad. very volatile region with paramillitaries, army doing whatever they want.

exactly, GOSL has strategic interests. if you go to Trinco harbour and surroundings, there are large Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslim communities and villages. Only Tamil villages and very few Muslim villages have become HSZ. And they are not compensated properly. Based on past events, everyone there suspects that when the threat of LTTE is minimised, those HSZs will become Sinhalese villages. What can be done to stop this land grabbing if a suitable solution is not put forward by Rajapakse which gives people the chance to safeguard their lands? Many Tamils think war is the only answer otherwise.

Extra judicial killings and their impunity of the killers continue:
The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information from reliable sources regarding a list of extrajudicial killings of 53 persons solely for the single month of October 2007 in Sri Lanka. Even though several cases of extrajudicial killings and disappearances have been continuously reported since last year, none of those responsible have been investigated or prosecuted.

I think JVP has committed a grave mistake by voting against it. It is clear that they would not have done that had there been any doubts about the victory of the government. However, it is good if they have declined from voting than voting against it.

UNP, of course, is nowhere near forming a government because of this outcome. However, if UNP manages to widen the divisions between JVP and the government, and if government act foolishly, this could mark the turning point.
