The `Poppy` has become the symbol of Remembrance and in many countries as Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, France, New Zealand, Malta, as well as countries belonging to the Commonwealth including Sri Lanka commemorate the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and civilians especially during and after the First World War , 1914 - 1918. This war, better known as the `Great War` was the first armed conflict which affected the lives of almost the entire world.
Remembrance Day is especially dedicated in honor of the members of the Armed Forces who laid down their lives during the `Great War`. It is remembered in some countries as Armistice Day and is observed traditionally on 11th November at the 11th hour of the 11th month because it was on this day, month and time when the Armistice became effective . The peace makers firmly believed that the Great war was a war to `end all wars`. The `Great War for Civilization` has yet to see the end of war. In the United Kingdom, in Sri Lanka and in many other countries, two minutes silence is observed at this day and hour . Wreaths usually made of poppies are laid to honor those who had fallen and thereafter followed by the National anthem .
The deadliest and bloodiest of the battles in the Great war` were fought in Northwestern Europe . The worst of these battles were in Belgium . There was not a tree nor a blade of grass in sight due to the `incredible` and devastating artillery barrages , machine gun and rifle fire of the combatants . Many of these `modern` weapons were improved versions of weapons used in the American Civil war.
The unidentified body of an `unknown soldier` was laid to rest on 11th November 1921 in Brussels which became a national moment of the `Great war` .
While some chose to wear white poppies as a symbol of peace, during the late 1930`s the `Suriya mal` (`Portia tree`) was used Sri Lanka on Remembrance Day. But he Red Poppy had come to stay and is still today the most popular symbol worn on Remembrance Day to Honor the soldier.
A surgeon, Major McCrae had spent seventeen days treating the severely injured men of almost all nationalities including Canadians, British, Indians, French and Germans in the Ypres salient. The death of a friend and former student, killed in action on 2nd May 1915 was buried outside his dressing room which moved Major McCrae to write the immortal poem `In Flanders Fields` whilst seated on an ambulance overlooking the poppies growing in the Spring.

Eeelamaya,
Even WW-I or WW-II did not last as long as Sinhla-Tamil War.
I heard that the longest war of modern times is the 30 Years' War (1618-1648). We're not that far behind! |

Tondaman has his own problem to deal with you guys.
Douglas Devananda and Aananda Sangaree have been spending time licking their master's feet. They don't have enough time to raise their voice when own people killed by Sinhala Thugs. If they ever make sound against the atrocities that have been committed by Sinhala Thugs, they will be dumped as a used condom.
