Damayanthi,
Saying that you used it only on an individual does not absolve you from the crime. If a person uses terms such as white pig or nigger in the civilised world, they will lose their job and be prosecuted. They cant say they called only that person a pig. Combining race with an insult is a racist slur, period. If you wanted to insult that individual you could have just called him pariah, not parademala.
If you do this in public in a civilised country you will not be able to stay on as a university lecturer. But in SL, anything goes. You may be hailed as a Heroine and be placed on par with our Haiti Veerayas. But you still are a racist:)) |

You also may try to use them outside SL and see what will happen to you! Good Luck! |

There were a couple of postings on this thread that 'Brit Parliament denounces the killing of TC'
It is not the brit parliament -but the ALL PARTY PARLIAMENTARY TAMIL GROUP .
As well as condemning this killing in the strongest terms, the All Party Parliamentary Tamil Group calls on all parties to honour the Cease Fire Agreement signed back in 2002 and return to the negotiating table.? (Tamilnet)
Just to put things in perspective

FYI, white Americans may not call a black American a nigger, but they will beat them up and put behind bars too for uncommitted crimes! Nearly quater of the black population in US is in jail! |

Damayanthi,
I am against racist behaviour, no matter from whom. Saying that other people used individual bad words does not absolve you from the hurt you caused to ALL Tamils by using parademala. Until you apologise I have to assume you do not regret saying it.
Your posting about USA is pathetic. Crime rate is higher among African Americans and therefore they are in jails dispropotionately. There are economic and social reasons for this. But there are very strong anti racism laws there. If someone in your position used racist insult in public they would have been forced to resign. But in SL you may get a promotion:)) |

This is the tragedy of the Sinhala chauvinist who write here, almost all of whom live in the Western world as equals to the White man. In fact, in most Western countries you have all rights to the law, equality and freedom the minute you hop off the plane.
The Sinhalese like the Tamils, Indians, Benglais, Chinese and all revel in the freedom of the West and the limitless opportunities to pursue their dreams. This is not to say there isnt racism, but when you are a Tamil or a member of any persecuted race, even the mere freedom to speak your language can seem like quite a treat.
I remember once when I was in Colombo, being asked my relatives to speak in English lest some of the Sinhalese on board heard us and recognized us as Tamils. Mind you this is the place that's supposed to be my country, and I am made uncomfortable to speak in my mother tongue. The real tragedy of it all is the hypocrisy of some of the Sinhalese who have no hesitation in claiming equality in their adopted lands, but insist on denying it to the Tamils who they have shared the island with for over 2000 years.
