In Sri Lanka, war dead don`t add up.
Thursday, 1 November 2007 - 10:05 PM SL Time
Judging by Sri Lankan government accounts of Tamil Tiger dead after decades of fighting, there should hardly be any rebels left.

Yet the guerrillas keep on fighting, and apparently dying in large numbers -- pointing either to an unlimited pool of combatants or a government wish to boost morale by playing up its prowess on the battlefield.

Analysts suspect it is more a case of the latter.

`There is a huge propaganda war going on to show that more people are being killed,` said defence analyst Namal Perera.

`The new battlefield is the media.`

Retired army colonel Susantha Seneviratne agreed there was `an exaggeration of Tiger casualties,` after a week in which the government has reported around a dozen dead each day.

`This is not unique to Sri Lanka. Almost every army in the world does it,` he said. `It is to help maintain morale.`

LTTE targets more families for conscription
Thursday, 1 November 2007 - 2:58 AM SL Time
Those seeking higher education told to give brother/sister to Tigers:

The LTTE, the self-claimed sole representative of the Tamil people in the North-East has imposed yet another restriction on Tamil youth in the Vanni to curtail their university education by making it compulsory for one of their family members to join the Tiger outfit, for them to proceed to their respective universities to continue university education.

Over 12 university students who crossed the Omanthai entry exit point for the first time after the escalation of violence on August 11, last year, have revealed those facts to the Security Forces, within the past few days.

Lt. Col. Jaya Pathirana, the Commandant In-charge of the Omanthai Entry Exit Point told the Daily News that 12 university students from Colombo, Ruhunu and Jaffna Universities crossed to cleared areas on Monday after receiving clearance from the LTTE after surrendering one of their family members to the LTTE.

Sri Lanka imposes censorship on war reporting.
Wednesday, 31 October 2007 - 11:09 PM SL Time
Sri Lanka has imposed censorship on war reporting a week after Tamil Tiger rebels carried out a devastating attack on the country`s air force, officials said.

President Mahinda Rajapakse used tough emergency laws to ban the publication of any information on military operations as well as procurement, according to a government notice obtained by AFP.

The move follows last week`s rebel attack that virtually wiped out Sri Lanka`s fleet of spy planes. The Tamil Tigers used a group of 21 elite suicide bombers to smash the Anuradhapura base where 14 troopers were also killed.

A notice on the `Prohibition on Publication and Transmission of Sensitive Military Information` was issued by Rajapakse to prevent any reports on military operations as well as plans to buy equipment for security forces or the police.

Patients visited hospitals 40mn times in 2006
Friday, 2 November 2007 - 10:31 AM SL Time
The total number of patients seeking treatment in hospitals in Sri Lanka annually is double the total population of the country. This was revealed by the advisor to the World Bank Health Development Programme Professor Nimal Kasthuriarachi at the Sabaragamuwa Health Service office in Ratnapura.

The Health Ministry, in collaboration with provincial ministries of health, is organizing meetings in all provinces in order to obtain the opinion, suggestions and advice from politicians, religious leaders, media personnel and from the civil society to formulate a tentative provincial health policy.

Professor Kasthuriarachi said the World Bank had advised Sri Lanka to show more transparency when allocating funds to the health sector. People in Sri Lanka spend 50 per cent of their medical expenses out of their own money, and annually 40 million people take treatment from hospitals, 80 per cent of them are women.

The Supreme Court has rejected the fundamental rights petition filed by the ABC Radio Network
Friday, 2 November 2007 - 10:42 AM SL Time
It granted a 250,000 rupee cash bail for the Managing Director of ABC Radio Reno Silva, who was accused of contempt of court. Turning down the petition Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva said it is a serious offence that Mr. Reno Silva attempted to mislead the Supreme Court by presenting false information. The Chief Justice said he had insulted the court through this action on his part. He ordered to show cause why such action should not be taken before the 26th of this month. When the case was taken up Counsel representing the company said the government withdrew their license without a reasonable cause. The Counsels representing the Attorney General`s Department said the ABC Radio is hushing up the truth from the court. The State Counsel said the media company on the 24th October at 9.56 pm broadcast that the tiger terrorists had entered the Ranminithenna village in Tissamaharama and murdered a group of villagers. He also played the tape recorder containing the news item. The Chief Justice opined that the petitioner has concealed these facts from the Supreme Court and that a media establishment which presents false information to the Supreme Court is not suitable for broadcasting news. The Chief Justice further said the Managing Director of the Company Reno Silva is engaged in illegal activities, with his financial power but he will not be allowed to abuse the court. The Chief Justice pointed out that the media establishment had attempted to create disharmony among communities through this misleading information to meet their political aims. He said such news could create large-scale unrest. The Chief Justice said the Managing Director of the company cannot be allowed to hoodwink the Supreme Court. He said this is an example to other media stations. Accordingly, the Chief Justice ordered that the licenses will not be valid for the company to continue broadcasting and the petition is being rejected. The Chief Justice said that if the petitioner so requires he can request another license from the relevant authorities. The Chief Justice informed the Media Minister that even if a radio license is to be issued to the company in the future, it should not be authorised to broadcast news. The attorneys representing the Managing Director of ABC Radio Reno Silva withdrew the petition, which requested an injunction preventing his arrest Full Story     Post Reply To This     Read Replies ( 5 )

Giruvapattuwa Knight tilting at windmills
Saturday, 3 November 2007 - 10:42 AM SL Time
The government is blowing hot and cold about censorship on military news. It has cancelled an extraordinary gazette notification announcing censorship since either wiser counsel prevailed at last or it got cold feet. However, the problem is not yet over. That gazette has all the trappings of a trial balloon. It might make a comeback sooner or later. Such vacillation is typical of all SLFP-led governments which signal left and turn right and vice versa. They are not capable of making decisions and carrying them out. Instead, they make hasty decisions and go back on them with equal haste leaving the people in utter confusion. They don`t think before leaping. They begin to think only after a stupid plunge into something like the recent forcible eviction of Tamils from Colombo lodges.

Towards a paedophiles` paradise
Friday, 2 November 2007 - 10:48 AM SL Time
A paedophile nabbed in Kandy recently with a fourteen-year-old boy, who was drunk at the time of the raid, has been enlarged on bail. The dispensation of justice is a matter best left to the learned judges. Suffice it to say that justice must not only be done but it must also be seen to be done.

It was only the other day that a minister pleaded guilty to fraud, which is a criminal offence and walked away after settling the State cost! Before him, an influential person had obtained bail on a Poya Day, when a learned judge took the trouble of opening his temple of justice for that purpose! The child abuser concerned, too, is a highly connected powerful businessman who has money for jam. But, we believe justice will take its course and deterrent punishment will be meted out.

Guard dogs as pet poodles, milch cows and consumers
Thursday, 1 November 2007 - 8:51 AM SL Time
In a democracy, it is the public interest that should take precedence over everything else. But, in this country, it has been relegated to the dustbin. The various institutions that have been set up to safeguard the public interest have undergone castration at the hands of powerful politicians and businessmen. The surreptitious insertion of Section 77 into the CAA Act in favour of Prima Company is a case in point. Obviously, a corrupt politician meddled with that Act to line his or her pocket at the public expense. But, who did it? Where are those parliamentarians campaigning for good governance? Why is the Opposition silent over this crucial matter, from which they can gain a great deal of political mileage? Is it because it fears that an SLFP leader who has now combined forces with it will get exposed?
