Next month`s two-Test cricket series between Australia and Sri Lanka is expected to be fought for a trophy named after spin rivals Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan.
Sri Lanka Cricket said they had written to Cricket Australia suggesting that the winner of the two-Test series, opening in Brisbane on November 8, be awarded the Warne-Murali Trophy.
`We have sent our proposals and have got a very good response,` SLC secretary Kangadaran Mathivanan told AFP.
Cricket Australia public affairs manager Peter Young said the trophy should be finalised by the conclusion of next month`s two-match series which will mark the 25th anniversary of Tests between the countries.
`There have been discussions between Australia and Sri Lanka for two or three years about introducing a perpetual trophy of the Border-Gavaskar type,` Young said in Melbourne on Wednesday.
`We are particularly conscious that the coming summer marks the 25th anniversary of Australia-Sri Lanka Test cricket.
`And we are very keen to formalise and finalise an appropriate manner for celebrating that and building further on the tradition that has grown between Australia and Sri Lanka.
`We would expect to be in a position to formalise and finalise that by the end of the series.`
Muralitharan is just nine wickets away from surpassing the retired Warne`s world record of 708 Test wickets.
Sri Lanka last played a Test series in Australia in 2004 and the next contest may not take place before 2010.
The Warne-Murali Trophy will become the latest series named after famous players.
Australia`s Tests against India are fought for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, named after batting greats Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, while Australia and New Zealand compete for the Chappell-Hadlee one-day title.

Murali: Don't boo me or I'll cry
Austrailians Fan: we didn't pay and come to cheer you, you monkey
Murali: don't hurt my feelings, I won't play again in Austrailia.
Warne: We Austrailians don't really like colored folks. It's in out blood to be rasict. My papa was racist. My gran pappy didn't like you, my great grandfather used the natives for target practice. It's in our blood.
Murali: Iam not coming back
Warne: It's not my fault I was born ignorant and I was born making fun people like you.
For the camera:
Warne: Hug and kiss and Make up

What an artificial smile and show of affection! Murali's eyes express the doubt!
