The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) will challenge a government decision to issue a special driving licence to drivers of both private and SLTB buses in the Supreme Court.
The association would launch a countrywide strike against the move, the association`s President Gamunu Wijeratne said. But Transport Minister Dallas Allahapperuma said he would go ahead with the proposal. `We won`t give in to their threats.`
Wijeratne pointed out that the LPBOA had already sent two letters to the National Transport Commission (NTC) and to Transport Minister Dallas Alahaperruma objecting to the issuance of the new driving licence.
The association pointed out that the Registrar of Motor Vehicles (RMV) had legally issued valid driving licences to all passenger transport drivers in accordance with the Motor Traffic Act. Both, SLTB and private bus drivers are required to undergo medical fitness tests every three years for the renewal of their licences. Those who were medically unfit would be excluded from service.
Wijeratne said that of 18,000 private bus drivers 5,000 to 6,000 drivers had begun to leave the service as they were thoroughly disappointed over unnecessary rules and regulations, especially the introduction of new licence. Some drivers had already left for West Asia.
Minister Alahaperruma said that the government was determined to go ahead with the new licence scheme even though there could be objections, strikes and attempts to seek legal action against it.
Around 2,500 people including school children were killed by motor accidents annually in Sri Lanka and more than 20,000 people were disabled in motor vehicle accidents. A large number were caused by negligence of bus drivers.

| This is type of attitude our people have. These types of regulations are put into affect in order make public transport more safe for passengers as well as others who use the roads. This is indeed a good move and I hope these regulations help take lunatic bus drivers off the road. |

Good move by the Government.
Wijeratne said that of 18,000 private bus drivers 5,000 to 6,000 drivers had begun to leave the service as they were thoroughly disappointed over unnecessary rules and regulations
This man is exaggerting. I don't see how regulations can be that though as to make 6000 out of 18000 to leave their jobs.

These bloody Private bus associations even can challange the legislature. very well Gemunu. You are the WORST man that comes to passengers mind when there is any 'HA-HO' about Private busses.
Gamunu.. Just shut your mouth and let the Transport Ministry to do a better job. We know how those damn Private bus drivers race on the roads. When they are on the roads, they dont mind any other vehicle, they keep the innocent passengers and pedestrians on the edge and the brink of the DEATH. Simply MOST of Private bus drivers are NOT FIT to drive passenger vehicles but they are WELL FIT fit to drive cattles and bulls to the Gilatine.
You bloody Private bus association must be dissolved and ligal actions would be sought to jial you guys for 10-15 years in the prison for each an every 'all island bus strike' you do.
Bring them on Mr Gemunu.. the day is not that far when the bus commuters will be gathered and set fire to your houses and the assets you have.
So bring your so called 'all island strikes' onnnnnn.

This is a very serious matter. Issuing special licence to these people is very good. But do not forget the other important factors. Especially the van drivers usually transport school children have to be trained for that job.
Apart from those lot more other things including improvements to the existing road infrastructure have to be done. |
