Govt. allocates Rs. 1 bn to speed up `Gama Neguma`
Tuesday, 16 October 2007 - 1:20 PM SL Time

The Government has allocated one billion rupees to accelerate the implementation of the 79,944 livelihood development projects to benefit Samurdhi recipients islandwide under the `Gama Naguma` programme, sources from the Ministry of Nation Building said yesterday.

The Director General of the Samurdhi Authority, Ravindra Hewavitharna, told The Island that it was an ongoing project and a special discussion was scheduled to be held this morning before the recommendations are implemented, so as to strengthen and accelerate the projects which are scheduled to start on October 17.

He said projects in the agriculture, industrial, livestock development and marketing sectors had been identified to develop the livelihoods of Samurdhi recipients.

All Grama Niladhari Divisions would be allocated Rs. 250,000 so that 25 identified families could commence the projects needed in the respective areas, with the Samurdhi Banks granting loans upto a maximum of 100,000 rupees.

He said that it had been recommended that the projects should be implemented through the Grama Niladharis at grassroot level with the assistance of the respective Government Agents and Divisional Secretariats monitoring the progress of the projects.

It has been decided that Zonal Additional Secretaries and line ministries would provide the advice and expertise in implementing these projects under the `Gama Naguma` programme.

I don't think that Gama Naguma will be accomplished.....10% of the Rs 1 bn is already booked by the famous Mr 10%. so, their will be a percentage allocated for each and every official who may sign any of papers in the project...until it reaches to the contractor with 20-30% of the amount.....the contractor (being a friend to the area politician) will swollow most of it...so, only 10% of the total 1 bn will be actually used in the project....

finally the theme has to be changed accordingly...
