President Rajapaksa paid CWC Chief Thondaman Rs. 7.5 million as a goodwill gesture to re-join jumbo cabinet
Saturday, 13 October 2007 - 12:49 AM SL Time

News coming from sources within President Rajapakse`s circles reveals that a sum of Rs. 7.5 million in cash was handed over to the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) Chief Thondaman as a good-will gesture to coerce him into re-joining the Cabinet in support of the Rajapakse led administration.

It is said that this money was paid to the CWC to re-iterate that there were no hard feelings between the Rajapakse`s and the CWC over the recent altercation between Basil Rohana Rajapakse and members of the CWC in presence of their leader Thondaman recently which led to the temporary resignation of CWC leader Thondaman as a Cabinet Minister along with his colleagues.

Bribing amongst the Rajapakse family is nothing new and this sum of money paid to the CWC is pittance compared to the Rs. 500 Million that was paid to the LTTE so that the LTTE would force the Tamil population under their control to boycott the Presidential elections in 2005.

When CWC representatives were contacted they denied the payment received from President Rajapakse, `well that would be quite an obvious answer wouldn`t it` said a senior Presidential aide.

So at least we can agree on one thing: no race has a monopoly on corruption.

The political system is corrupted to the core and people with dignity don't want any part of it and by chance if a bleeding heart tries to do any good he wont be elected.

VP or the thief Karuna has nothing to do with this. The rot is in the south but due to the numbers and center of control the whole country has to suffer.

DVLADV/AnuD,

Its puerile to say these two theives are clean. They are thieves of the same web of Mahinda, CBK, Ranil etc. The only difference is that Mahinda is pilfering money officially while VP and Karuna doing it via diaspora.

The Tamils who don't understand this issue are stupid.

AnuD,

When racial issue gets entangled to every tom, dick and harry its a hard thing to convince right from wrong. I would admit Sinhalese leaders are corrupted but most Tamil guys here think that their leaders are squeaky clean, that is the difference between thinking through the box and out of it.

What the big heck, I just say what I see, I am an independent man. No political party for me. I like Green colour as an environmentalist but that is the colour of the party who has no shame in the country.

Terrorism does have little to do with corruption. If not terrorism: politicians will use another issue as a smokescreen to fulfill their greedy objectives. As I have said before, if one idiot is serving you remember thousands of idiots elected him/her.

There is no check and balances in the Srilankan system as it is. All branches of the government are managed by one making it not answerable to any.

Like prostitution corruption has always been there and it is going to be there, this goes to developed countries and leading economies as well. If you are to control corruption to a manageable level then the Judiciary, Police and other public institutions should be independent. Otherwise it will always be just another banana republic.

Remember a police state is not when the police take over the state but when politicians take over the police. In SL politicians have taken over the Police, Military, Judiciary. So what do you expect.
