Warmth makes the world more humid
Thursday, 11 October 2007 - 2:51 AM SL Time

The atmosphere is becoming more humid in a pattern consistent with man-made climate change, researchers have found.

Their study, reported in the journal Nature, confirms the global increase in humidity found in previous studies.

They say that the pattern of humidity increases in various parts of the world resembles that projected by computer models of man-made global warming.

Water vapour is a greenhouse gas, and it is thought that having more of it in the air could amplify temperature rise.

The major report released earlier this year by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said that this amplification was the largest `positive feedback` mechanism they had identified.

Previous research has shown that humidity increases in Europe, a response to higher temperatures, were amplifying the temperature rise by about a factor of two.

Stormy waters

In the new study, researchers from the University of East Anglia and the UK Met Office`s Hadley Centre analysed a dataset of humidity measurements made across the world.

Data came from weather stations, ships and buoys, painting a global picture.

The scientists compared the global and regional trends with the projections of a computer model developed by the Hadley Centre, which estimates the relative influences of natural cycles and increased concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

Human-induced changes, they calculate, have been the bigger factor behind the global humidity increase seen since 1975.

`This confirmation that humidity and temperature are increasing as expected has important implications for future human health and comfort,` observed the Hadley Centre`s Peter Thorne, one of the research team.

It could also have important implications for extreme weather events such as tropical cyclones and rainstorms.

Some of the scientific team were involved in another study, reported in July, which showed that human-induced climate change was behind trends of increasing and decreasing rainfall noted in various parts of the world.

Potentailly these kind of change in weather patterns mean countries like Sri Lanka could experience more extreme conditions to the already humid environment.

machan this has been a global phenomenon recently up in the UK too it has been experiencing variations in weather.

I think countries like ours gonna affect much worse. I think before politicians and terrorists ruin the country we must do something just to control this magnitude of echo devastation. I personally in favor of things like energy from Biogas (CH4&CO2), though it has a percentage of of CO2 this cancels out by the photosynthesis. So overall we are not releasing CO2 unlike other sources of energy. The good news is in SL we use that about 45% for the domestic energy. If we can make it to 70% or more thats even better because we have cattle dung and enough domestic waste products.

I also think that Mahinda was less or badly advised to listen to the Chinese on that Coal power plant in Norichcholai. That should not have been taken in as a pros. because last thing we want is to create mass release of CO2.

Since I was a kid I was a 'Parisara Pissek':)) I hate wastage and destruction. Believe me macho all my bulbs in my home are energy savers and I eat only Organic stuff as far as possible. I also try to recycle many things I use and I am really concern on this. I am not 'Naya duwanawa' machan, but I hate to see what is going on in our little island with so much wastage of natural resources without a proper plan to recycle them so as to introduce the renewable energy concept. i.e. we can easily build incinerators in CMC and burn the bloody waste in Colombo kunu goda and create that energy for our benefits than depending mostly on hydro power.

Then again I think Mahinda must reintroduce a day or two like JRJ did on 'tree planting' among the nation and kids. We must also make efforts to introduce programmes over the tele about energy efficiency and environmentally friendly methods for our TV viewers to disseminate that concept.

I wonder what our new Parisara Emathi is doing. He is a JHU guy and if as his party suggests loves the country he must launch some programmes to empower the rural sector to protect our environment en masse.

Yes Norochcholei is a bad idea...what we need is an environ minister like you...youwill fit into that post very well with your knowledge..:):):) any ideas to enter into politics???:):):)

Machan, what is that energy saving bulbs?? would like to know..so that we also can use..
