Split in LTTE dissident camp: Karuna sacked by second in command
Tuesday, 9 October 2007 - 5:48 AM SL Time

Karuna, who broke away from the LTTE and formed the pro-government Tamileela Makkal Viduthlai Puligal (TMVP) in 2004, has now been sacked from the TMVP`s Working Committee by a rival faction led by Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyaan.

A statement issued by the Pillaiyaan group said on Monday, that Karuna had been sacked for financial irregularities.

However, efforts were still on to effect a patch up between Pillaiyaan and Karuna. `Some members of the Working Committee support Karuna, while some others support Pillaiyaan. Discussions on a compromise are going on,` TMVP spokesman Asad Mowlana told Hindustan Times.

Reports said that Pillaiyaan`s group had been complaining that Karuna was keeping 70% of the money collected from the people for his private use, and giving only 30% to the TMVP.

Karuna`s Absence

Karuna is currently abroad, presumably in the UK, at the request of the Sri Lankan government. His presence in Sri Lanka had become an embarrassment for the government which was accused by the international community of being `complicit` in the crimes committed by him, crimes like abduction of children and extortion of money from civilians.

Utilising Karuna`s absence from the East and now from the country itself, Pillaiyaan became the de facto head of the TMVP. By an earlier arrangement, he was to keep his activities confined to Trincomalee district, but recently, he had broken out of the confines of Trincomalee and started setting up offices in Batticaloa district, the TMVP`s heartland.

Journalists who had visited Batticaloa recently, said that Karuna`s lieutenants had disappeared and only Pillayaan`s men were around.

seems the GOSL still cares a lot about Karuna and going out of their way to make sure he is in safety. Why?, especially after the East is gone. Do they want to develop him into the next Sean Connery?

Chennai, 07 October, (Asiantribune.com): An Indian Prison Guard shot dead an unarmed Sri Lankan representative from a fishing society visiting the Tamil Nadu prison in Madurai, on Friday (October 05, 2007).

On Friday morning Warnakulasuriya Canicius Fernando, (44), a resident of Negombo, who was the representative of All Ceylon Fisher Peoples? Trade Union for Migrant Fishermen in Sri Lanka, visited Madurai Central Prisons to meet the four (4) Sri Lankan fishermen serving a prison term for straying into Indian waters. They were to be released on October 8 and Fernando was visiting them to make arrangements for their return home.

He was shot and killed in the afternoon by a Prison guard, Devarajan, in front of the Madurai Central Prisons about 3.45 PM. According to a report Canicius Fernando was shot below the neck and died on admission to hospital. Prison authorities said that the Sri Lankan was shot because he had refused to stop when asked to do so by the guard.

P.M. Amza, Sri Lanka Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai, told the Asian Tribune that the Government of Tamil Nadu had officially informed the Sri Lankan government that a Sri Lankan national, Canicius Fernando, had been shot by an outer security guard at the Madurai Central Prison on October 5 and later pronounced dead on admission to the government hospital in Madurai.

So far Muthuvel Karunanidi Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has not express regret over the unnecessary slaying of a Sri Lankan national by a Tamil Nadu prison guard.

Amza told ?Asian Tribune? that President Rajapakse was notified of the death of Canicius Fernando and he has advised Amza to provide assistance to the family members of the deceased in going through the legal formalities and also to arrange the body of the deceased to be brought back to Sri Lanka.

He added that with the concurrence of the Government of Tamil Nadu, an officer of this Mission was immediately deputed to travel to Madurai, on the night of October 5, to meet and address this issue with the authorities concerned. The Officer is currently in Madurai and is in contact with the local authorities. In addition legal assistance has also been secured to protect the interests of the family of the deceased.

Amza also told that Hussein Bahila, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, contacted the Indian High Commission in Colombo to provide the required visas for the family members of the deceased to air-dash to Chennai to claim the body. Accordingly Indian High Commission in Colombo opened the consular section on Saturday and issued the visas and the family members are expected to arrive in Chennai today.

In the meantime Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai has already expressed the concern of the Sri Lankan authorities regarding the tragic fate of Fernando. It has been brought to the attention of the Government of the State of Tamil Nadu through diplomatic channels.

According to Sri Lanka?s Deputy High Commission, Fernando,
