Sri Lanka proposes SAARC consultation on climate change

SAARC Foreign Ministers met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly for consultations on the most recent developments within the organization. Minister Bogollagama proposed a SAARC Consultation on climate change in advance of the forthcoming UN Meeting in Bali. He went on to highlight the importance of connecting the SAARC capitals through increased air links, thereby promoting SAARC capitals through increased air links, thereby promoting connectivity and people-to-people interaction. He also extended an invitation to all SAARC countries to participate at the International Conference on Countering Terrorism, which is being organised in Sri Lanka in October, 2007.
On the same day, Bogollagama attended the G-77 Foreign Ministers meeting, the largest inter-governmental organization of developing countries within the United Nations. The G-77 provides a platform for countries of the South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint positions in negotiations on major international economic issues with the United Nations system, as well as to advance South-South cooperation for development.
He also participated in the new G-7 initiative on `Foreign Policy and Global Health` launched by the Norwegian and French Foreign Minister in the presence of the UN Secretary-General and Director-General of who. The Sri Lankan foreign Minister supported this important initiative which looks at the international foreign policy dimensions of health issues, in particular, with regard to enhanced donor funding and planning for pandemics. He informed the meeting of the successful holding of ICAAP-AIDs Conference in Sri Lanka with over 2000 participants, under the guidance of the Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition. Reference was also made to the issue of human resources development in the health sector and the need to address the `brain drain`.
