Do they, think that with Al QAEDA, IRAQ and AFghanistan too.
The military and Americans know this but Bush is a slow learner, sooner or later he will understand.

Eelan,
Do not worry about LTTE 'not having' people to communicate in English.
Because we Tamils don't have any such worries.
Of coures I am not worried, because I don't think anyone has to worry over the quality of English unless someone lives and works academically in the English language in an English speaking country. Most of the Sri Lankan guys can converse in English and that means knowing 40-50% is ample to convey the message.
Strategically knowing good English can convey the message effectively than try to save the bacon. This is why when people like SWRD was running the country he can weather the English storm very well. I also remember how JRJ battered in eloquent English to a BBC announcer when he was bombarded with some difficult questions. This is what people like Mahinda, Ranil or CBK lacking in its called assertion. I guess Tamil Silva may give his usual sneering to make everyone amuse and the journalists will get the message across. Adela doesn't know the Tamil situation than what old Bala was uttering. So all in all its up to requisite than anything else.

And he (SWRD) deprived the same opportunity for the rest by bringing in Singhalese only legislation. What a selfish genius he was! If one dosnt have wisdom then English or education is nothing!
Btw, JRJ since we are talking of English, let me correct you with my broken English? your first sentence is wrong!!
people like SWRD was
people cant be was.. Rather you could say 'person like SWRD was' ))))

I never thought Priyanthy's innocent question,
Can Weeramonkey speak English??
could make this much of commotion among majority community members. Maybe because of these English professors often make fun of LTTE members' ability to speak in a 'proper' English. I think in Sri Lankan government probably everyone speaks some English with thick Sri Lankan accent, except those politicians, who perished a few years ago, could have spoken in 'Englishmen' English. |

I am not putting on another's hat. As an adult its my moral responsibility to encourage others not discourage.
Remember a language is only a mode of communication. Although proper is preferred, as long as the message is conveyed the objective is achieved.

AGP,
And he (SWRD) deprived the same opportunity for the rest by bringing in Singhalese only legislation. What a selfish genius he was! If one dosnt have wisdom then English or education is nothing!
Its nothing to do with wisdom or lacking in wisdom, its called political game plan and adroitness. Everyone knows there how to make a mountain out of molehill upon given opportunity. SWRD was a cunning geezer and he seized the opportunity, thats all, since then everything was just history. After 51 years we still talk about his politics and almost 50 years since he left the world we still mention him almost everyday for somthing or another.
UNP never had an answer to such challenging issues such as SWRD making 'Sinhalese only' act. Because SWRD wanted to reap the benfits of the majority. I think most of the politicians are now unable to address that even the LTTE-friendly UNP, because if UNP says something against that act then the Sinhalese won't vote them to the parliament, its a catch 22 situation than anything.
Btw, thanks for that correction, I was thinking on the 'SWRD' factor than 'people' in the sentence(Object than the Subject). Beside my English is pretty ordinary and I never deny that.

1.JEEZ! this matter of English!
Its only a tool guys.
Intelligence & ability to do things does not depend on one's fluency of English or lack of it. Eg Einstein and a million others.
You can hire professional interpreters for that.
All Europeans , Arabs , Chinese , Japs , Latinams do so.
2.Despite whatever the US Ambassador says , military conflicts -unless settled by negotiations - end up with the side which has better manpower and other resources winning.
Military skills are standard-all warring parties acquire them and is secondary.
No need to be elated or despondent because of something an ambassador said.
