Sri Lankan air force bombs a top rebel leader`s hideout, military says Tuesday, 2 October 2007 - 8:46 PM SL Time Sri Lankan fighter jets Tuesday bombed and completely destroyed a Tamil Tiger camp routinely used as a hideout by one of the rebel group`s top leaders, the military said.
The bombing occurred about 6:30 a.m. near Iranamadu, just south of Kilinochchi, the main town in the Tamil Tigers` de facto state in the north, the military said in a statement. The military said a rebel leader was in the camp at the time of the attack, but declined to identify him. Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan did not answer repeated calls from The Associated Press seeking comment. The air raid came as violence grew throughout the war-torn region. Troops in the Vavuniya district, on the frontier between rebel and government-controlled territory, repelled an attack by rebel forces Monday afternoon, killing four of the rebel fighters, the military said. One soldier was also killed in the battle.

President Mahinda Rajapakse tops the opinion polls Thursday, 4 October 2007 - 7:45 AM SL Time The latest opinion poll has placed President Mahinda Rajapakse on top with two-thirds giving him thumbs up for his performance as President. The poll commissioned by the popular business magazine, LMD and conducted by TNS Lanka indicates clearly that the relentless anti-Rajapakse campaign run by the pro-Ranil Wickremesinghe Leader newspaper and also partly by the Daily Mirror-Times group has failed to convince the public that Mahinda Rajapakse has failed. President Rajapakse has scored heavily on the following issues: ? `working for peace in the country,` ? `doing his utmost for the country,`

Ranil bangs media over bank Thursday, 4 October 2007 - 7:54 AM SL Time Opposition UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and SLFP (M) MP Mangala Samaraweera yesterday slammed the media, in particular a leading international news agency, alleging that they were playing into the hands of the Government. The tirade came as the journalist from a leading international news agency posed the question whether the UNP-SLFP (M) Alliance, known as the National Congress, could block the controversial bond issue worth US $ 500 million. Responding, the UNP leader said that a reply had already been given to that question via a press statement issued by the party and added that the media had however failed to publish it. `That is the fate of the Sri Lankan media today. They are frightened of losing HSBC advertisements,` the UNP leader alleged.

A tragicomedy of bribes Thursday, 4 October 2007 - 7:57 AM SL Time Those who may have thought the Tigers were thick-skinned and unresponsive stand corrected. LTTE spokesman S. P. Tamilchelvam has told a Tamil newspaper, as we reported yesterday, that the outfit never took a bribe from President Mahinda Rajapaksa to instigate a polls boycott in 2005 to facilitate his election. Belated as his response may be, it is indicative of pressure that the Tigers have come under vis-à-vis the allegation in question. They could have taken any scathing attack for granted but not an allegation that projects them as being no better than the political goons in the South, who can be hired to rig elections. That is a bit too much for an organisation that calls itself a liberation movement to stomach.

People can`t at least say paan Tuesday, 2 October 2007 - 7:21 AM SL Time There doesn`t seem to be an end to the suffering of the ordinary people fighting quite a battle to make ends meet. Multinational companies and their local counterparts seem to be engaged in a contest to find who could deliver the hardest blow to the hapless consumer. Shell and Prima are well ahead of the others. Should the contest be opened to the state sector as well, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) is sure to grab the cup! (It is feared that another fuel price hike is in the pipeline.) The people are reeling under the latest increase in bread prices. The cost of living is so unbearable that they, as a local saying goes, cannot at least say paan. The government is trotting out lame excuses. The Deputy Minister of Trade has sought to blame the price hike on the open market economic policies initiated by the UNP. In making that vain attempt, he has only cut a very pathetic figure. Has he taken the people for a bunch of suckers? They may be stupid but not so stupid as to believe in such claptrap. What the people expect of a government is not passing the blame for everything to the Opposition which they have relegated to political oblivion but to do something to ameliorate their plight.

The Burmese Caravan of Death Monday, 1 October 2007 - 6:07 AM SL Time Generals ruling Myanmar may have thought they won another bout with the pro-democracy movement by cracking down on the recent popular uprising led by Buddhist monks. But, in reality, they are getting bogged down in a politico-military mire of their own making. The 45-year-old military junta stands condemned the world over for its brutal suppression of democratic opposition. The UN has flown a special envoy to Myanmar in a bid to persuade the headstrong generals hell bent on unleashing unbridled violence to perpetuate their dictatorship to mend their ways. ASEAN has minced no words in denouncing its member state and expressed revulsion at what is going on there. People the world over have pledged solidarity with the Burmese struggling to oust a repressive military regime. Minister of National Heritage Anura Bandaranaike has taken a swipe at his Cabinet colleague, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama for his silence over Myanmar at a time the entire world is condemning violence against Buddhist monks there. One cannot but agree with Mr. Bandaranaike, whose concern for the people of Myanmar and Buddhist monks is totally devoid of hypocrisy.

Sri Lanka see good side of free hit Thursday, 4 October 2007 - 7:59 AM SL Time If you were surprising to see the Sri Lankan bowlers not delivering a single no ball, you`ll be further taken aback when you realize that for the entire first game at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium on Monday there wasn`t a singe no ball. Along with the Sri Lankans, the English too were disciplined in not giving away the extra delivery, which is now penalized by a free hit. The free hit is one of new rules that has been included in the playing conditions by the ICC for overstepping meaning that in the next delivery the batsman could be out only through a run out. Furthermore, if there was no change in strike, the field remains the same like the previous ball for the free hit. The new rule was recommended to the ICC by it Cricket Committee chaired by Sunil Gavaskar and had three Sri Lankan representations in the form of Mahela Jayawardene, former coach Tom Moody and Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle.

Sri Lanka`s Marvan lets down selectors, misses Aussie tour Thursday, 4 October 2007 - 7:58 AM SL Time Former captain Marvan Atapattu was left out from the Sri Lanka squad to tour Australia in November following his unprofessional approach towards the national selectors and Sri Lanka Cricket. The 36 year old elegant right hander was set to meet Cricket Board officials and the national selectors at a special meeting at the SLC headquarters yesterday to decide his future career. But chairman national selectors Ashantha de Mel said that Atapattu had badly let them down by informing the SLC that he is unable to turn up for the meeting at the eleventh hour. The right arm fast bowler sent down his ten overs on the trot and had success in his first, third, fourth and tenth overs as he finished with outstanding figures of four wickets for 31 runs as England were bowled out for 150 from 34.5 overs while chasing Sri Lanka`s challenging total of 269 for 7. Maharoof who came into the attack as the fourth change bowler responded magnificently by removing the top three England batsmen for the addition of just 30 runs and within a space of five overs. Maharoof had a tough task as the England openers Alistair Cook and Phil Mustard had got off to a flying start and were maintaining the required run rate. The pair were just beginning to open out with Mustard hoisting a six and stroking a four from consecutive deliveries off paceman Chaminda Vaas.
