Sri Lanka`s peace deal collapses over party defections Tuesday, 16 January 2007 - 11:43 PM SL Time A landmark deal between Sri Lanka`s ruling party and the main opposition to bring a political solution to the island`s ethnic conflict collapsed Tuesday, officials said. Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe met President Mahinda Rajapakse and urged him not to bring opposition lawmakers into the cabinet, a move the party has said would wreck the deal, but the request was turned down, a top official source said. `The president made it clear that he was not fishing, but the opposition MPs were stalking him and were ready to cross over en masse,` said the source close to Tuesday`s talks at the presidential secretariat.

GARAGE SCAM `FUNDED TERROR GROUP` Thursday, 18 January 2007 - 7:07 PM SL Time Money stolen from customers visiting a petrol station cashpoint in Hull may have been used to arm terrorists 6,000 miles away in Sri Lanka. Detective Inspector Paul Welton, of Humberside Police, said his seven-strong team was investigating possible links with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, known as the Tamil Tigers. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of customers using the cash point at the Jet garage in Princes Avenue, west Hull, may have fallen victim to the `scam`, said Det Insp Welton. The British Government classifies the Tamil Tigers - a separatist group fighting for independence in north east Sri Lanka - as a terrorist organisation. Criminals are believed to have started cloning cards at the garage cashpoint in early November and then used customers` personal details to withdraw cash at machines across the world.

ONGC Videsh gets oil block in Sri Lanka Thursday, 18 January 2007 - 7:05 PM SL Time The state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has been awarded an exploration block by Sri Lanka in the island`s northwestern Mannar basin, a Sri Lankan minister said Wednesday. `Out of eight identified exploration blocks, we have given one to the Indian government on nomination basis and another to the Chinese government,` said minister of railways, transport and petroleum A.H.M. Fowzie. `The balance will be given through bidding process in three months time,` Fowzie told reporters at the Petrotech 2007 exposition on hydrocarbons sector here. The minister said the delay in awarding exploration blocks was due to changes in the country`s exploration policy and the time taken in the appointment of new consultants. He said all the requisite seismic data had been collected, which were sold to the ONGC Videsh, the overseas arm of ONGC, and British Gas.

Battle-torn Jaffna gets back to barter Thursday, 18 January 2007 - 5:57 AM SL Time People in Jaffna have gone back to the barter business which was in vogue in the 15th century. After the A-9 land route was closed essentials including milk powder are distributed through the co-operative societies. Some people now tend to exchange some of the items they buy with other essential items they need. One person buys baby milk powder but he really needs full cream milk powder, while another person who has bought full cream milk powder needs milk powder for his baby. Both exchange their packets of milk powder. In another case one person gets malted, but he needs full cream milk so he barters his purchase with one who has bought full cream milk but does not need it because his doctor had advised him to drink malted milk as he is suffering from chikungunya.

Take effective steps to stop this robbery Thursday, 18 January 2007 - 6:01 AM SL Time However nauseating the subject of corruption is, we, nevertheless, cannot avoid returning to it regularly since the menace constantly keeps spreading its octopus-like tentacles far and wide. The serious and uncontrollable proportions the level of corrupton assumes causes much concern and worry to all sections of people in this country. The report submitted to parliament by the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE), which is headed by National List MP Wijedasa Rajapaksa, lends irrefutable credence to the aggravating situation of corruption in most spheres of administrative activity in the country. True, the people were aware of the many and varied allegations of corruption against politicians and state officials. However the extent of the damage it causes to the country`s economy and the veracity of the allegations have always been in doubt.

From big bellies to bad English Wednesday, 17 January 2007 - 3:40 AM SL Time The Daily Mirror Health Action page last Friday highlighted a report that spending more time around the family dinner table -- and less time in front of the television-- can help prevent children from getting fat with all its resultant consequences of non-communicable diseases such as cholesterol, blood sugar blood pressure and heart ailments later in life. Among 8,000 children followed from kindergarten to third grade, those who watched the most TV were at the greatest risk of being or becoming overweight, according to findings by Dr. Sara Gable of the University of Missouri, Columbia and her colleagues. The fewer meals children ate each week with their families, the more likely they were to put on excess pounds. `Families need to work together to help children maintain a healthy weight,` Dr. Gable said in an e-mail message. `Even the simple things, like how often families eat together and the amount of time that children spend watching television, play a role in children`s weight status.`

A parasites` paradise Tuesday, 16 January 2007 - 3:35 AM SL Time Aesop tells us about a fox which got stuck in a rocky cleft in a stream. A swarm of ticks descended on it and soon they were bloated with the vulpine blood. On seeing the poor fox in excruciating pain, another animal offered to help him. It was too small to pull the fox out but offered to remove the insects instead. Terrified, the fox turned down the offer with a plea: `Oh, don`t do that, for god`s sake! They are already full and let them be. If you remove them, another set will take over and I will be dead before long!` The people of this poor country are in the same predicament as that wretched fox. Or, their plight is worse, as they, unlike the wise fox, opt for new political ticks at elections only to have them feasting at their expense. Yesterday, we reported that parliamentarians have showered on themselves pay hikes with retrospective effect. While the sectors like health, education, social welfare and infrastructural development are starved of funds, the MPs have hurriedly set aside money for their salary increases.
