Union: Navy destroyed fishing boats, not Tiger craft
TamilNet, Wednesday, 31 January 2007, 11:36 GMT
On Saturday Sri Lanka?s military said it had foiled a Tamil Tiger attack on the Colombo port and that three Sea Tiger boats had been destroyed. The navy said nine people had been arrested in connection with the attack. However, the All Ceylon Fisheries Union (ACFU) Tuesday contradicted the military and said the Navy had fired on fishing boats and arrested fishermen. An alleged black out on news had censored details of an attack said to have destroyed four Sri Lankan vessels in Colombo Harbour last Saturday. A flotilla of five attack boats and four explosions were registered by eyewitnesses.
On Saturday the Sri Lankan Defence Minsitry said naval craft blew up one boat Saturday after the three were spotted near a restricted zone, before chasing and sinking the other two.
'The navy successfully foiled the (LTTE) attempt,' the ministry said.
Six people, including three who jumped out of one of the suspected LTTE craft, were arrested, military officials were quoted as saying.
A foreign container vessel, Pelaponesian Pride, flying under a Panamanian flag, was damaged by the explosion of the second rebel boat hit by the navy, Navy Rear Admiral B.A.G.G. Peiris told reporters, adding: 'a container burst open and came off its original position as a result of the shockwaves.'
However the All Ceylon Fisheries Union (ACFU) contradicted the defence ministry?s version of events, saying naval craft fired on Sinhala fishing craft and arrested innocent fishermen.
President of the Gampaha branch of the ACFU, Aruna Roshantha, spoke to the BBC Sinhala service Tuesday.
Fishermen had witnessed fishing boats being attacked by the Navy, he said.
'The boats caught up fire and blew up. Nine crew members from the blown up boats were detained. Three are still in custody', he said.
Roshantha said one of the boats destroyed by the Navy was bearing no. OFRPA 1666MBO.
Twenty one fishermen are among those arrested in connection with the alleged attack on the Colombo Port, he said.
'Our boats were fishing about 20 miles from Colombo in the deep sea when the Navy Dvora gunships sorrounded them', Roshantha said.
Meanwhile the Sunday Times said that the alleged attack came just half an hour before the Navy, with the support of elements of the Army and Police, were to carry out a rehearsal of the Colombo Harbour Action Plan.
Police stations and port authorities were among those informed that the rehearsal was scheduled to begin at 6 am, the paper said.
The LTTE has not commented on the attack |

I think Tamilnet stepped on their tail again. The report on BBC details the arrest of fishermen on suspicion on tip offs to the LTTE. This has occured AFTER the incident at the colombo port.
In fact the article is already here at LNP

Tamil civilians ready to revolt against LTTE - Anandasangaree
The most crucial problem the country facing today is the liberation of the Tamil people from the LTTE's atrocious rule, in the districts of Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu and in parts of the districts of Mannar and Vavuniya, TULF leader V. Anandasangaree said yesterday(31).
'The LTTE's atrocities have now reached a climax and the people, unable to bear them any more are longing for a change. If no action is taken immediately Prabhakaran, will soon pave the way for the total annihilation of the Tamil race. I have very reliable information that people want a smooth transfer of power from the LTTE to the Government,' Anandasangaree said.
He said: 'Now with a demand from the LTTE for one person from each household, they are prepared to defy the LTTE and revolt against them. They are also prepared to welcome and give all co-operation for a friendly army that will give an undertaking to give protection for their lives and properties inspite of any provocation that they may have to face, while engaged in the process of liberating them.'
'The world does not know that there is a group of people, under the dictatorial rule of the LTTE, all Tamils, living in areas under their full control, without rights, facilities and with no guts to protest. There is none to receive the protest and to rush to their rescue.
They are at the mercy of the LTTE. My solitary voice is echoing and re-echoing the grievances of these unfortunate people, with hardly anyone responding to my call. These people are undergoing this agony not for one or two years but easily for quarter of a century, with no hopes of any relief.
Till the ceasefire agreement was signed these people were hoping that they will soon be able to lead a peaceful and normal life like others, but the CFA dashed all their hopes and contrary to their expectations the CFA only legitimised the LTTE's grip on them.
Undeterred by humiliations and the threat to my life, I go forward to fulfill my sacred mission of liberating the people who had been subjected to immense hardships, deprived of all their rights and living like slaves for more than 24 years.
The 22 Members of Parliament fraudulently elected by the LTTE with the people's vote, not to represent them in Parliament but only to act as proxies of the LTTE.
As one elected at the last free and fair Parliamentary Election held for the North and East in December, 2001 and coming first out of the nine members elected from the Jaffna Electoral District, the duty is now cast on me to speak on behalf of the Tamil people of Sri Lanka although I am no more a Member of Parliament.
Prabhakaran and his clique are very fond of accusing the Sinhala Community as a whole, of adopting a policy of genocide of the Tamils. I do not agree with them.
I like to see this man become President one day |
