Attack on Sri Lankan police bus kills 10 people, government calls for sincere talks
Wednesday, 31 January 2007 - 11:27 PM SL Time

Sri Lanka: A bomb attack on a bus carrying off-duty Sri Lankan police and soldiers killed 10 people on Wednesday, as the government called on Tamil rebels to engage in sincere peace talks to end the escalating bloodshed.

The roadside bomb hit the bus as it carried police and soldiers to their homes in eastern Batticaloa district, killing nine officers and one civilian and wounding 13 other people, according to military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe. He blamed Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack.

Chief government spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said the government was ready for peace talks with the rebels. `We want the talks to be sincere,` he said.

Sri Lanka`s main international backers ? India, the United States and Japan ? have asked the government to give priority to a negotiated settlement of the rebels` demands instead of opting for military action.

But the government has in recent weeks sent in the military to take back several areas that had fallen to the rebels.

Peace broker Norway`s ambassador, Hans Brattskar, was to meet with the leader of the Tamil Tigers` political wing, S.P. Thamilselvan, in the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi on Thursday, embassy spokesman Tom Knappskog said.

The meeting is part of routine contacts with the opposing parties, Knappskog said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission chief Lars Johan Solvberg met rebel official Seevaratnam Puleedevan on Wednesday to discuss security and cooperation in the cease-fire monitoring process, spokesman Thorfinnur Omarsson said.

He said Puleedevan assured Solvberg of total protection and cooperation for the monitors. The government also gave the monitors a similar pledge, he added.

The meeting was the first contact between the Tigers` leadership and the monitors since November.

A resurgence of fighting since last year has killed thousands of civilians and fighters despite a Norwegian-brokered cease-fire, which effectively exists only on paper.

Terrorist LTTE at work. this is how they talk peace!

WWI WWII were not WON by holding offense so that ONLY guilty were killed.

British government used 'demoralising missions' across German cities to mass murder civilians by the hundreds of thousands. So did the Americans across Japan: fire bomb cities had a average casualty count higher than Atomic bombs alone.

So I say that the only way to go on the offense against LTTE. many civilians will die on both sides: but who said war was a clean business?
