Problems of Tamils caused by Tamil Tigers -- Douglas Devananda
Tue, 2007-01-30 05:31
Colombo, 30 January, (Asiantribune.com): Douglas Devananada the Minister for Social Services and Social Welfare attributed the defeat of Prabakaran and his Tiger cadres in the east to the correct political leadership provided by the Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse, military leadership provided by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka and also of the leadership provided by Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, alias Colonel Karuna, and his cadres. Douglas Devananda said that the tactics adopted in the east may not be applicable in the north.
He said that Government of Sri Lanka did not give in to the external pressures brought to bear on them while a sustained military campaign advanced victoriously to liberate the Tamil people of Vakarai from the clutches of Prabakaran and his fascist regime.

However, Douglas Devananda, one of the pioneer resistance leaders against Prabakaran and LTTE, told the AsianTribune that the tactics adopted in the east may not be applicable in the north.

He said that the Government has a primary duty to win over the people of the north.

He pointed out in 1975 when Prabakaran took up arms and killed Alfred Durraiyappah and several policemen, people of the north in the beginning were thrilled. They felt that such heroism was needed at that time.

But since 1975 up to todate (2007) -- a long span of 32 long and torturous years -- the people and political conditions have changed dramatically.

They have begun to realize now that Prabakaran and his men were responsible for the suffering and the losses experienced daily by them. The Tamils in the north, especially in the Jaffna peninsula, are already aware that LTTE`s cadres were responsible for all the killings and their sufferings.

Tamils began to realize that LTTE`s motto of ?Kill or get killed? is the cause for all their sufferings.

The people of Jaffna are facing the nightmare of being killed or maimed by either hidden claymore mines or grenades thrown indiscriminately by their paid coolies called Makkal Padai ? the auxiliary forces.

The main victims of planted claymore mines are civilians ? crime and destruction against our people. Motor cycle gunmen of the LTTE are on a killing spree in the peninsula killing innocent civilians and blaming them on others.

The so called Makkal Padai cadre, or cadres who plant the claymore bombs, or throw hand grenades are in the end paid lump sums of money by the LTTE agents of the particular locality.

Today Jaffna peninsula is the biggest killing field of the LTTE. People are furious about the LTTE and its cadres.

Government has to take new initiatives to gain from the growing dissent and anger of the people against Prabakaram. For the last 32 years he has caused misery, destruction and genocide -- eliminating our leadership -- with no gains to the Tamil people.

The time has come for the President and the Government to win over the ordinary Tamil civilians in the country.

Government has to consider taking urgent measures to provide a long overdue political solution to the ethnic conflict that has almost paralyzed the lives of the Tamil people in the country.

Also Government has to provide the required urgent needs of the people in the peninsula without disruptions.

Tamils believe in a solution through talks and negotiations, whereas Prabakaran had never made use of the opportunities presented to him in negotiating a sustainable peace in the country.

He is a failed leader. His failure began in 1987 and has continued in a row with nothing to make him a leader in the eyes of the Tamil people.

In 1987 after agreeing for a negotiated settlement, he reneged on promises he gave personally to Rajiv Gandhi and launched his war against India. In the end he plotted and planned the killing of Rajiv Gandhi. Today he is a convicted criminal and, if the legal process works, he will be deported to India to face charges of assassinating Rajiv Gandhi. I understand that India will not hesitate any longer to expedite the extradition as he is no longer involved in the negotiation with the Sri Lanka Government to end the bloody conflict let loose by him.

In 1990 when he negotiated with Sri Lanka President Ranasinghe Premadasa he got all what he wanted from him including protections, arms and ammunitions, loads and loads of money. President Premadasa through his good offices arranged to bring his wife and children from Sweden where they were registered as refugees in different names. In the end he turned his guns against Premadasa and killed him also.

Subsequently, he went to negotiate with Chandrika Bandaranaike, the former President of Sri Lanka and in the end again through a suicide bomber in October 1999, in the political rally attended by her and miraculously Madam President survived from the jaws of death.

In 2002 he entered into a ceasefire agreement with Ranil Wickremasinghe, the then Prime Minister and started the negotiation. After six rounds of talks in 2003 April, he reneged on his promises. Though no attempt has been made on his life yet he was politically murdered in the last Presidential election.

Prabakaran entered into a ceasefire agreement only to elevate himself as non-state player with claims to an ad-hoc administration in the areas said to be under his control.

Prabakaran as well as the international community failed to understand that whatever agreement Prabakaran entered with the Sri Lanka government, all those agreements are subordinate to the constitution of the country.

The LTTE is fully aware that the day the Ceasefire Agreement is abandoned it will force the Sri Lanka Government to hound the LTTE leaders and the cadres as common criminals and terrorists. This is the reason why they pay lip service to the CFA which is no longer valid. They are hiding behind the Ceasefire Agreement to commit crimes against humanity and war crimes.

In the light of their crimes against humanity it is preposterous for the international community to consider the LTTE as a non-state actor. A terrorist organization which has scant respect for democracy, pluralism, human rights and rule of law should be given that status.

Sri Lanka Government as well as the international community must bear in mind the Ceasefire Agreement has strengthened the hands of Prabakaran and his cadres to oppress the Tamil people under his one-man regime. The problems of the Tamils are caused mainly by the LTTE and not by the Government. It is the duty of the Government and the international community to strengthen the hands of the ordinary people of the north and east regions.

LTTE is like another terrorist organization disseminating propaganda through electronic and print media. LTTE has succeeded in establishing hundreds of online news websites, news papers, radios as well as televisions in Europe, America and in Australasia.

The TamilNet is the feeder website that provides the information to all these media outlets of the LTTE all over the world.

TamilNet though is registered with a US address, it owners are from Norway and Norwegian government is funding this website to spread terror and destructions against a sovereign a government of Sri Lanka and its people including, Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese.
