Crossovers were too old to wait for portfolios - UNP
Tuesday, 30 January 2007 - 5:06 AM SL Time

A majority of those UNP parliamentarians who crossed over to the Government are in their 70s and 80s and cannot wait for another election to get portfolios. That was the main reason why they had left the UNP, former Speaker, Minister and present Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera told The Island yesterday (29).

UNP members who crossed over to the Government have no right to accept the Mahinda Chintana policy programme as 99 percent of the `UNP members and supporters had opposed it, he said.

The UNP will definitely take disciplinary action against all those who joined the Government though the process will take a long time since we have to call for their explanations and serve notices on them,` he said.

He said the UNP was given a clear mandate by 4.7 million people but that mandate was not for its members to join the Government.

The MoU between the SLFP and UNP has been clearly violated by President Mahinda Rajapakse and Karu Jayasuriya, he said

A committee was appointed by the UNP with Bradman Weerakoon as secretary to study the working of the MoU but the SLFP which too was expected to appoint a secretary to their committee under a mutual agreement of the two parties never appointed one to their committee, he said.

The Government committee was a high-powered one with the Premier Wickramanayake, Leader of the House Nimal Siripala and SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena and the UNP committee comprised Karu Jayasuriya, Rukman Senanayake and himself but the agreement under the MoU about the committees could not be worked as the government did not appoint their secretary, he noted.

Karu Jaysuriya who came for the last UNP Working Committee meeting a few days before he crossed over with others did not say that he was leading a group of UNP members to join the Government he said.

`Even if Ranil leaves the UNP the people who supported us will never leave or betray the party,` he said.

These politicians are shameless, they are mocking our democracy and taken us for idiots.Karuna,Mr Anandasongaree,Tna,Tulf and Douglas Devananda and his party should join the JVP in the opposite benches as a mark of protest to this 52 member monster cabinet, which is the mockery of the world.Looks like the cross over fellows must have blackmailed the President to get these portfolios as a condition for joining and betraying their own voters. The voters,if they honorable must not forget them at the next election and vote them out. They are just a bunch of opportunists. This is another sad day for the Democracy in the island. This new 52 member Cabinet shall be named,'RAVING MONSTER LOONY CABINET OF NEVER NEVER LAND OF LANKA'

Yes, they are too old to wait to get a chance to serve the country. If they wait for another election they they might pass away before that. Then the poor people in the country will not get the valuble service of these politicos. What a pitty if it happen to be so?

Now these ministers specially who crossed over, will do their level best for the development of the country. But someone has to tell them what to do. Because in the past they have shown that they had not ideas to do that. But they are willing. That is why they crossed over

Justman & Lion,

Very well said.

It is a blessing for RW that these lot of thieves are out of his camp.

But, he must quickly appoint electoral organizers for those vacated by some energetic, intelligent & loyal
to the Party
members and show its strength & voter disapproval of these scoundrels asap.

Correct, though not exactly. Specially the original UNP old crooks like Dayaratne, Bandara and others too greed for power and perks and running short of time.

I venture reiterate another famous cross over in the seventies, when LSSP headed by Dr. N.M. Perera and Dr. Colvyn R De Silva after languishing in the opposition for more than a quarter century, decided to cross over just to enjoy power at the evening of their lives. There were no concern for perks because these politicians too honest to pawn their birth rights for perks but policies they did jettison on this cross over.

Calamity struck soon with rice barriers and the rest when people had to eek out a meal from the municipal garbage cans and lick their palms to taste some sugar. The world renown economic wizard, Dr. N.M. was heading the Finance Ministry during this time. The Government, including those who went to taste power were dumped into political abyss in that they even lost their Parliamentary Seats.

It was JRJ who restored some dignity to their lives by offering State Funerals at their demises.

Such is the fate of the cross over of more educated golden brains.

Another aspect of this cross over is that a conspiracy forgotten is emerging to light. The divulging of the Karuna Escape from tiger den by Nalin, supported by Milinda week before the presidential elections ensued the banning of voting in LTTE areas which in turn ensured the defeat of Ranil. Now the cross over is taking place under the patronage of the father in law of Nalin. Conspiracy or what?

This not exactly true. Yes there were some like Milinda, GLP, Neomal,Mahinda Wijesekera who would sell their mothers for perks. However, the rest left because of RWs obsession with clining on to power at the expense of the party. So the ULTIMATE blame goes to RW.

I agree with Anizam.

Now the political life RW is over. If he is willing he may work like a philanthropist. Other than that, He should be out of parliamentary politics.

SOme how some of these politicians who accpected this many ministerial posts should be ashmed.

There are no better than drug dealers, underworld gangsters and MOSTLY PIMPS. For money, thy would do anything.

This time the UNP is right.

Politics is a business, those who believe in open economy and 'secular' state must understand that. This bunch of businessmen, especially the one like Mahinda Wijesekara can't wait any longer. They have to pay back their mates who gave money for their campaigns. With a leader like RW who is sure to loose any election, would people invest any more in the election campaigns of UNP? Karu, yeaterday, was clear on this. He said he is going to 'serve' UNP supporters who did not have an opportunity for a while. This is a business, just like the war.

Livera believes RW is better off without these politicians, but it reminds me the time when the same people crossed-over from CBKs government. Then some said CBK is better off without those 'thieves'. I'm sure it wasn't Livera.

Is it a surprise that Anizam has toned down a little bit after the crossovers?

What would be the next move of military? Are they still ready to move on with the campaign?

What happens to APC? Is it now all party or one party?
