Police nab robber gang posing as cops
Saturday, 27 January 2007 - 4:47 AM SL Time

Negombo Police yesterday arrested a four-member robber gang that posed as policemen to rob shops, petrol sheds and houses in the area.

Along with the suspects, four police uniforms, one T-56 automatic rifle, one hand grenade, two repeater guns and two home made pistols were also taken in, SSP Negombo Premasiri Vithana told The Island.

He said that of the four, two were army deserters.

`They had been involved in this game for years. They divulged the names of places they had robbed. Among them were petrol sheds, passenger vehicles and shops. They had robbed millions of rupees in cash and jewellery,` SSP Vithana said.

The robbers had divulged that they entered houses or stopped vehicles posing off as police officers and committed the robberies by holding residents or passengers at gun point, he said.

`They had robbed a petrol shed and left some clues that enabled us to trace them,` SSP Vithana said.

The group had been assisted by two others, and they too would be nabbed soon, he said.

Yes! most of them are armed and very dangerous to the Society. The do not rob only Shop owners. They are like wolfs. I recall an incident to one of my friends. They got into the house and asked to surrender all the IDs and disconnect the tel line posing a STF. and looted the entire house. When the prime suspect was caught and identified as 2nd Lt. of a regime. He walked upto the Vitim and told to withdrew the case or face death.....This is law and order in Sri Lanka. This is not inthe north this is south.....

Don't tell me that one is a politician and the other a ranked police officer.

For you and me every gangster looks the same. But the gangsters know their own and don't take kindly to their territory being invaded.

Police are in a fight for the turf. Now they don't have a monopoly on racketeering, blackmail and robbery and the new gangs too are comprised of current and ex servicemen with political SUPPORT.
