Yes..they got what they wanted at Sampur..they got what they wanted at Vakarei they are going to get what they wanted at Kilinochchi too

By Iqbal Atha.

This re-capture, which some hailed as the end of the LTTE, was celebrated with pomp and pageantry at a ceremony in Colombo on December 5 1995. Barely seven months later, on July 4 1996, in the Government controlled Jaffna peninsula, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva (now the chief peace negotiator for the Government) escaped death at the hands of a female suicide bomber. The senior most Army and Police officials in the district were killed. Just 14 days later, on July 18 the guerrillas launched a major attack on the Mullaitivu military base, one of the worst incidents in the history of the separatist war.

Swathi,

you are absolutely right mate,
Now its too late for you to think in these terms. GOSL should have looked at this 30 yrs ago.

They should have done this 30 yrs ago, like what they did to the JVP in the late 80's. Look how JVP is sitting clean today . Both streams (JVP & LTTE) took to arms for the same reasons, hunger, inequility and lack of justice. And these issues knows no racism. It's just common to countrys like ours. Unfortunately Tamil politco branded the LTTE's cause in different colours.

My dear Mahinda Aiya
Going here, there, or nowhere

The traditional multi ethnic wishes and peace greetings again seem to be inappropriate if not absurd at a time when you and some of your top advisors appear to be dragging the country into one hell of a bloody mess on various fronts.

The undeclared Eelam war IV is raging and despite the headline hitting victory claims and euphoria over last Friday's military takeover of Vakarai, ground realities tell a different story. Government and defence authorities have regularly told or warned journalists that they should seek clarification from the Media Centre for National Security or the Defence Ministry before publishing any reports on incidents in the North-East.

We could reflect on just one incident to understand the reality that what comes from such official sources is often misinterpreted or misreported, if not twisted and distorted.

On January 13, the MCNS and the Defence Ministry issued an official report that a LTTE terrorist was killed at a check point near the Library Junction in Jaffna when he attempted to pull out a hand grenade. The report praised the heroic action of the soldiers at the checkpoint and most media reported it like that, meaning that millions of people swallowed this story.

Later investigations had revealed that the so -called terrorist was Rev. Nallathamby Gnanaseelan of the Evangelical Tamil Mission Church in Jaffna and what he tried to take out was not a grenade but was a small Bible or Cross. Rev. Gnanaseelan had earlier taken his wife and seven year old daughter to a nearby hospital to get some treatment for the child. While the mother and child were waiting in the hospital for treatment the Pastor rode back to the church where they were having a day of fasting and prayer for peace. But the gates of hell brought his mission to a bloody end.

With such biased, one sided, one sourced, prejudiced and sometimes inflammatory reports being given on the situation in the North East, it is no surprise that a war mania is being created, and a huge Sinhala Buddhist cheer squad appears to be behind violence and killing which are violently killing the hallowed Dhamma way of non-violence, love, compassion, mercy, forgiveness and dialogue for conflict resolution. Another instance of bluffing or ridiculous cover up is the crisis over the large scale recruitment of child soldiers in the East by the Karuna faction and alleged collusion by sections of the security forces and the government. When the United Nations special envoy Allen Rock made such charges after a recent visit to the North-East, government spokesmen threw stones at him and virtually damned him as a liar or a Tiger stooge. But the New York based Human Rights Watch, in a report to be released this week drops a deadly bombshell on the government by saying the group also has substantial evidence of security forces collusion in the recruitment of children by the Karuna faction.

Even the JVP, once the main war drum beaters for the government, now charge that the military operations in the East have some political objectives and agendas. It is widely believed that the East is being cleared and prepared for the election there, and the strategists behind this policy apparently believe they would be able to manipulate a victory for Karuna's political party in the Eastern province. But some in the highest circles in the government and the security forces have warned that in promoting and boosting the Karuna faction, the government may be creating a deadlier monster than the one it is trying to destroy. They point out that it was Karuna who gave the orders for one of the most barbaric massacres of the Eelam war-the extermination of more than six hundred policemen. According to most military analysts the recapture of Sampur last year and Vakarai on Friday are important steps, but a long tough road lies ahead. The analysts believe the LTTE made a strategic withdrawal from Vakarai and what the security forces liberated on Friday was virtually a ghost town. Apparently the LTTE which had been using sea routes to supply men and materials to Vakarai will again use these sea routes to launch a massive counterattack. Then there is the potential catastrophic in relation to some fifty thousand people who fled Vakarai for whatever reason. They are now languishing in varying degrees of deprivation, dispossession and destitution. Providing food, clothing and shelter to them while restoring even basic civil administration would be a massive task. For those who are gloating about military victories, what happened in 1996 might help to put things in perspective. After the much heralded victory of Operation Jayasikuru with the capture of the Jaffna peninsula many claimed that the Eelam war was over and the Tiger dead. But within months the wheel turned the other way and we saw disaster after disaster for the military, while Colombo and the suburbs were shattered by massive attacks including the Airport inferno.

On the political front, the achcharu appears to be worse than ever before with confusion within confusion, cliques within cliques, and now the ridiculous situation of MoUs within MoUs.

According to latest reports, you and chief operator Basil Rajapaksa now apparently want about twenty UNP MPs to join the government. These do not wish to be referred to as dissidents or rebels but as reformists. Whatever the name there are two major charges against most of those who are planning cross over. One charge is that some of them have allegedly being involved in corrupt deals leading to the plunder of hundreds of millions of rupees in public funds. The latest report submitted to the parliament by the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) exposed massive rackets involving millions of dollars in the privatisation of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation and Lanka Marine Services. The names of Millinda Morogoda and Karu Jayasuriya have been mentioned in connection with these deals. So big were the kickbacks the slick boss is now buying prime hospitals because, tragically, health has become a big business today and more tragically many doctors are degenerating into traders.

The other charge against the reformists, dissidents or rebels or whatever they are is that many of them are federalists. Sinhala nationalists who met you at Temple Trees on Saturday warned of serious consequences if these federalists are given cabinet portfolios. The JVP Polit bureau in a ultimatum has warned that the party will quit the government if the UNP MPs are accomadated.

But, much in line with the current trend of saying this that and nothing, or going here there and nowhere ,you gave a vague answer.

So that's where we stand-the military front uncertain and unbalanced as is the political front, while the vital area of the economy is plunging towards bankruptcy.

Yours sincerely.
Koththamalli

All our sinhala brothern are short sighted. They are looking at only the present victories. Forgotten what brought to them in the past. We all know Jaffna was captured, flags were flown, Gen Ratwatte became a big hero. What happened next lost major miltary camps with many deaths...then started jayasikuru which never finished the job.

Now we all know what will be in store in the next few months to go.
