| Dauntless, your posting was very informative. Many of us drive vehicles but fail to understand the technology. |

| 4 stroke is the way to go on the pollution front - for the reasons well explained by Dauntless above. Also, the other major contributor to SL pollution problem is the heavy reliance on diesel for fuel. GOSL should phase in a bigger tax on diesel or reduce tax on petrol to encourage petrol use over diesel. Obviously both do contribute pollution to the atmosphere but diesel is far worse than petrol. |

I can remember in India in several big cities they have banned petrol tuk-tuks some time back and forced them to convert and run using Natural Gas(I think they still do). Thats one way to solve the pollution problem without without totally banning them.
PS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_rickshaw
In July 1998, the Supreme Court of India ordered the Delhi government to implement CNG or LPG (Autogas) fuel for all autos and for the entire bus fleet in and around the city. Delhi observed a dramatic improvement in the quality of air with the switch to CNG, and this is important for a city where it is not uncommon to see pedestrians and drivers wearing nurse's masks for protection against the prevalent city smog. Initially, auto-wallahs in Delhi had to wait in long queues to get their CNG cylinders re-filled, but the situation has improved drastically with the rise of petrol pumps that sell CNG. Certain other local governments are also pushing for four-stroke engines instead of the current two-stroke versions. Typical mileage for an Indian-made autorickshaw is around 35 kilometres per litre of petrol. Edited By - ThinKing - 19 Jan 2007 06:18:29 GMT |

Sri Lanka has more urgent matters to attend to. 2 stroke 3 wheeler is the least of its problems.
Maybe the gov has a chance to make some money in buying new 4 stroke 3 wheelers in which case THIS MATTER WILL BE GIVEN TOP PRIORITY.

| Bajaj have 4 stroke 3 wheelers in addition to 2 stroke so there is no big issue in banning the 2 stroke models. I have seen some of the 4 stroke models on SL roads. |

This might improve the air quality in built up areas after 2011.
But what remedial action are taken to minimize the impact on the environment until 2011.
How about modifying the engines to reduce hydrocarbon and CO emissions? |

Whatreallyhapp...
though it's true that we have many other important issues to attend... i think this also should be top priority...
this goes way beyong race...religion and all those limiting stuff people have created for themselves...
Everything has to get started from somewhere a some point and a head start is always good :)
you're alligations against the government doesn't hold water since these are imported by private companies and even vehicle taxation doesn't depend on the engine cycle... it's mainly displacement...type of fuel and add-ons |

As of Punnakku Chinthanaya by 2011 SL will be another Singapore or Malaysia.
Similar to those countries it is welll developed with good mass travel systems,... no need for 3 wheelers.
So by 2011 all 3 wheelers should be banned since SL will be in par with Asian developed nations. |
