Two stroke three wheelers banned from 2011
Friday, 19 January 2007 - 7:14 AM SL Time

Three Wheel taxis with two stroke engines will be banned with effect from 2011 and imports will cease from 2008,the government announced yesterday.

Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa told yesterday`s Cabinet press briefing that the decision has been taken in the interest of the peoples health.`This will help improve urban air quality.`

`Hydro carbons emitted by two stroke engines exceed the National Vehicular Standard of 50 micrograms. Therefore the Cabinet of Ministers decided to accept Environment Minister Maithripala Sirisena`s proposal to implement the ban from 2011 onwards.`

Yapa, said that India from whom Sri Lanka imports most of its two stroke three wheel taxis has also imposed a similar ban.`They have stopped production of such vehicles.`

He said that there are 280,000 three wheel taxis in Sri Lanka and 40,000 is added annually.

Yapa admitted that two stroke motor cycles also contribute to air pollution, but no decision has been taken on it.

There is no doubt that these two stroke engines are sources of air pollution.

However, with the oil prices surging this would affect the middle class who uses the auto's extensively. Furthermore the thousands of people employed in this industry too would be unemployed.

While looking at creating alternative employement opportunities for these people, the state should also take actions to improve public transport both buses and railway.

Otherwise it will be a nightmare for the public.

Common man's Prez.

Interesting times ahead!!

I think Sri Lankan need to ban three wheelers,

Now most of Sri Lankans may want to crucify me for this thought, so let me explain why Sri Lankan should get rid of these vehicles, there are many aspects to get supporting hands on this matter,

Prime one is the health concerns through air pollution and the low safety standards in the vehicle, fact which most of the times plays big role directly on the lethal out come in case of accident.

There are massive violations of road safety rules by these vehicle operators thanks to the size of the vehicle, but this factor is not a direct negativity since the vehicle is not the guilty paty.

The negative psychological and structural image it produces about the city.

The traffic it costs on pike hours.

And there are many more reasons why these vehicles should ban.

As the alternative transport methods government should work on governmental and privet owned less pollutionary, affordable, healthy, ways of transportation systems, like metro, tramcars, electrical busses.

There will be major problems how to find the resources for the new methods but to build and grow as a civilized state Sri Lanka should go for the frontier expansion.

There are some Diesel Three-wheelers already in SL, more will have to be made available at a decent price, preferably in Part-Exchange.

Full Employment to the party and family boys and girls.

All the 100 cabinet ministers, 9 provincial governers, 9 Chief Ministers, 9 x 4 Board Ministers and their associated administraters and support stff will be provided with bullet-proof 4 wheelers. Don't worry about how to finance, clever president discoverd a clever enterprise to print more money. Only ingrediaent needed is imported paper. Local staff will print the notes.

I think most of you guys have got this one wrong.
two stroke engines are not fuel effecient...wastes a lot of heat etc etc. In other words they waste a lot of energy and even fail to acheive proper burn.
Why these were so popular was that they're light weight which makes the power to weight ratio pretty impressive...
they're very easy and cheap to maintain in terms of repairs... No messy valves and timing stuff to worry about etc.
They require less TLC as opposed to a 4 stroke...

What the government must be aiming to do is to ban 2 strokes so 4 strokes can replace them. 4 stroke engine is the opposite of the two stroke one in many ways. and the good thing is they're getting cheaper, lighter and more advanced thatn ever before...

2 dtrokes are put to death all over the world for very simle reasons... it's an old technology that has been surpassed byt the 4's :)

this law is good news... no more 2 smokes... the blue smoke you see putting out of some motocycles and most trishaws are because 2 strokes needs an oil to keep the combustion chamber lubed... this oil gets burnt and and you get that annoying smoke :)

good job gosl :) and good job mr.brown we're all tired of arguing everyday :))))
