[COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (BosNewsLife)-- Tensions remained high in the Sri Lankan city of Jaffna Wednesday, January 17, after a pastor was shot dead by government security forces, triggering fears of more ethnic and religious clashes in the volatile region, local Christians and investigators said.
38-year old Nallathamby Gnanaseelan, who leads the Tamil Mission Church in Jaffna, was reportedly shot and killed January 13 by Sri Lankan security forces in Chapel Street after he had taken his wife and daughter to hospital. |

'Derana' journalist assaulted
(LeN- 2007 Jan. 17, 7.45pm) Another journalist has been assaulted on Monday during a time which the government boasts about press freedom.
This time the victim is K.C. Saranga who is a Programme Producer at the 'Derana' television. He is the producer of the 'Derana Aruna' programme which interviews various people about the latest trends and incidents. The day which Raviraj was killed, it was Saranga's programme that interviewed him last.
After finishing work on Thai Pongal day, last Monday, he had been returning to his lodge in Dehiwala when an unidentified group of three had suddenly snatched his media identity and said 'you are the one we were looking for' and started to beet him up.
He told LeN that a complain was lodged to the Dehiwala police on the same day.
Several journalists have come under attacks under the present regime, one of them being the killing of freelance journalist Sampath Lakmal while few others including the Sunday Leader editor have received death threats. A number of journalists have already fled the country due to similar threats. |
