We want to go home - Plea from surrendered would-be LTTE child soldiers
Thursday, 18 January 2007 - 5:56 AM SL Time

Gripped with fear and anxiety, a group of young child soldiers-to-be, who surrendered to the Special Task Force (STF) following the fall of a key LTTE base in Ampara, made a fervent appeal to be reunited with their families once again.

`We want to go home,` was the quick reply to a question raised by the media from five young boys aged between 16 and 20 dressed in plain black T-shirts and shorts. They were presented at the weekly defence news briefing in Colombo yesterday.

The young boys, all residents of Tirukkovil, Ampara, were allegedly abducted by the LTTE during last year and held at the rebel camps in Ampara. According to one youth there were some 70 child soldiers undergoing training at the camp at the time the five boys were abducted out of whom 20 managed to flee.

`We never joined. We were abducted. We feel safe now,` 18 year old Murugan* said adding that he was abducted by a group of rebel cadres who tricked him to come out of his home by calling for assistance to move a damaged vehicle. The five escapees said they were not given weapons training but instead had to undergo strenuous physical training and were also tortured and brutally assaulted every time they made an attempt to escape the clutches of the LTTE.

`Our parents don`t know we managed to escape. If we were not abducted we will still be studying,` * 16 year old Parameshwaram* said.

Government defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwelle said the five young boys will undergo rehabilitation before being reunited with their families although in their best interests the boys may even be offered employment overseas.

The LTTE is said to be holding several child soldiers despite its commitment to release them by this month and the failure to abide by this commitment will see the UN presenting a report to the Security Council working group next month slamming the LTTE and other actors responsible for child abduction and recruitment.

Responding to the report the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Radhika Coomaraswamy told the media on Tuesday the documents show the ongoing attempt by the world body to end the global scourge of recruiting children as soldiers, along with other violations of children in times of conflict.

`The reports are important because they are part of the UN family`s attempt to end impunity for crimes, especially grave violations against children, and especially that relating to the recruitment and use of children as child soldiers,` she told the UN News Service.

Ms Coomaraswamy said the UN is seeking a commitment on behalf of the main parties to move swiftly and effectively, especially in the area of not recruiting child soldiers and to make commitments to UNICEF and other UN agencies for the immediate release of children under their charge, under an action plan [which UNICEF has].

May I offer some suggestions as to the drivel that will follow from the pro LTTE propagandists:

* is daily mirror so must be punnaku
* trumpet net will 'ignore' this news or perhaps put an article suggesting that GOSL has helped Karuna kidnap these kids
* they will say they were in a LTTE 'special education' class for kids to teach first aid
* they were not kidnapped but saw the light shining out of chief terrorists b*TThole and decided to join

Just a few thoughts - i am sure the propagandist brigade will have some far more creative excuses.

More punnakku for the sinhala gullibles.

How come not a single child soldier fatality has been produced by the GOSL as evidence?

Sinhala modayas will remain modayas as long as the sinhala politicians feed them with punnakku.

If LTTE abduct children, the LTTE would have over 250,000 cadres

how come they only have about 15,000 - 20,000 cadres

about 700,000 tamils live under their control

only about 2.5% of tamils in LTTE areas are tigers

sinhala propaganda is not very good at fabricataing stories

What about sinhala child prostitutes, go and try and prevent them from selling themselves to european paedophiles before fabricating these stories.

child soldiers - the sinhalas still cant explain why there isnt 250,000 tigers if forced recruitment is taking place. sinhala army is about 120,000, and they would have surely be beaten now

try lying among yourselves, not with tamils as we are not gullible
