Instead of increasing and developing the infrastructure of the roads with fly overs, by passers, exits, on ramps etc etc. The increasing number of vehicles are being diverted this way and that way on the exhisting roads hoping to ease congestion. Common sense should indicate that it is not a solution to the congestion and the smooth flow of traffic.
SL has a road system designed to accomodate the vehicle population of the 50s and the 60s which has grown by more than 100 fold during the years. But the roads are virtually what we had in the 50s and 60s except for slight widening on some roads here and there and the surfaces being carpeted. Edited By - kiwikanga - 17 Jan 2007 13:51:59 GMT |

We have never had Leaders who thought of the future. If we had, we would have put laws and guidlines how people should construct houses or businesses away from the road. If our leaders thought to the future, they would have devided business areas , residential areas and goverment offices and may be a schooling district. Being a Small Country we really need this type of planing. Infrastructre in kandy just as you said cannot be developed becuase of this. Making one way is i guess the last line of hope to problem which cannot be solved.
Kandy was one such a beautiful city before I moved to Colombo. But now to travel to kandy on fridays takes almost 4-4.5 hrs and city traffic is just pathetic. We are promoting kandy as a Tourist District and how can do this if the Tourist waste their time on the road with a messy traffic. It really reflects very bad on our country. |

| 1-way or 2-ways, Highway code must be comlied with. THe law enforcement officers -police- are the most serious offenders. |

Dimantha,
We did have leaders who looked at the future but it was their own future and not the future of the Nation that they looked at!
I was amazed to learn that the traffic diversion scheme at the Maradana junction which was completed about 5 years ago was a plan designed in 1947!
Today the priority of the politicians is not the development of 'Necessary' infrastructure. A developing country such as SL needs a good road network and infrastructure to head towards progress and development. Politicians have other personal priorities to spend on.
Our Rail road network too is pathetic to say the least. Since the British left in 1948 we by ourselves have not been able to add one extra kilometre to the rail network apart for the line added from Anuradhapura to Mihintale which had one train running on the date of inauguration and since then no train has run on it! Still the Matara to Kataragama line is struggling to progress and the Mahinda Rajapakse International Airport at Weerawila seems to have taken precedence!
Quite apart from adding on to the rail network our pundits have taken away what the British had in place eg: Nanu-Oya - N'Eliya line, Avissawella - Ratnapura - Opanayaka line, Avissawella Ruwanwella Line and of course the Tigers too have chipped in by taking away the line beyond Vavuniya.
SL is a country that will never develop as it is a Nation where the majority are bufoons electing so called leaders with absolutely no patriotism, statesmanship or vision to steer the country to progress. |

| I agree with all you said,But the problem is lying somewhere else.We know all by 1944 the country is producing intellectuals, economists, policy makers...so many PHD people with government funds....where their work goes? to the western ...do you know how many free education outcomes living out side serving others..Arent they responsible partly?Haven't they have a dare to stay and work for the good of the country?Making policies to other countries..All have forgotten their duties...If they had put their efforts in practice in government depatments...make such policies (political) so as not to entertain businessman to enter politics...we are out of these problems...Who made these policies..JR ..no his educated capitalist money mongers... |
