Sri Lanka figured second in the list of journalists killed in the South Asian region last year, according to `Media Monitor South Asia 2006` which was launched simultaneously in Colombo, Kabul, Dhaka, New Delhi, Islamabad and Kathmandu yesterday.
In Colombo, the findings were announced at a media briefing by the Sri Lanka Chapter of the South Asia Free Media Association.
President of SAFMA Sri Lanka, Lakshman Gunasekera said that Media Monitor 2006 gives a gloomy picture of the South Asian media.
Pakistan tops the list with four journalists killed, while in Sri Lanka two journalists and five media employees were killed.
Secretary General SAFMA, Imtiaz Allam said that Media Monitor 2006 covers not only attacks on the press but also content of the media.
`Given the importance of press freedom and the issue of media and their content, SAFMA has proposed to all stakeholders in media, including journalistic bodies, editors and publishers to form a more broadbased media monitoring body that will not only monitor attacks on the press but also audit media content`
The South Asia Press Commission (SAPC) is being formed in this regard, he said.
SAFMA Sri Lanka office bearers Sharmini Boyle, N. M. Ameen and S. Sivanesachelvan also briefed the media.

Does not say who killed the journalists
Govt of the LTTE
As a Democratic government the courts will sit in judgment of the killings But if they are killed by LTTE law enforcement will be unable to investigate the crime
So! let hear more facts |

Second in the list of South Asian journalists killed
It is obvious, Pakistan is in the first place..
Because it is a lawless country with warlords in the remote areas and full of Al-Qada terrorists in the border with Afghanistan.
It is a great shame for the Country like Sri Lanka to hold the tail of this terrorist country.
If you want to be a friend of Pig,you will have eat the Sh.t..
So,it is not a wonder,Pakistan is in the place of one and the back licking GOSL got the second.. |

Does not say who killed the journalists
Govt of the LTTE
You do the math most killed were Tamil's in supposedly pro LTTE media, and the one poor Sinhalese who had the guts to point out Army corruption. |
