Special Report from Jacinta Cruz in Wanni
Your eminence, we are not impressed. In fact, we feel very
ashamed of you, ashamed that you wear the vestments of a
holy office and yet opt to lie on behalf of a brutal
outfit that threatens the very future of the Tamils in the
country.
The Holy Father of Mannar Soosaiappar Rayappu also known
as the Rt. Rev Joseph Rayappu has come out of his hiding
wherever he was, for the last several weeks. It was even
wondered whether he had gone somewhere outside the country
to receive instructions as to how best he could interact
with the LTTE and keep whatever programme that has been
conspired, in proper focus and on course.
This is also what is being done by some of the Tamilnadu
politicians in the pay of the Tiger terrorists.
The Catholic Church certainly plays a key role in the
affairs of the LTTE, even a directive role and there is
indeed a major force operating from behind the scene.
Velupillai Prabhakaran is only a hit man deliberately
raised to the stature of a liberation leader but he
neither understands what liberation is nor the decency,
dignity and decorum needed for a leader. He is no military
genius either; whatever credit heaped on him reflects the
skill and ability of Karuna Amman of the TMVP.
Prabhakaran is a downright coward and lives shivering for
his life in a hole thirty feet below the ground.
A few days ago the Sri Lankan Air Force bombed a Sea Tiger
base in Iluppaikadavai in the Mannar District. The base
was in a small area known as Padahuthurai, named such
because it was here small fishing boats used to be moored.
However, over a long period of time the Sea Tigers are
masters of it and the local people have moved away from
it. The bombing has been quite effective and the loss of
Tiger cadres has been considerable.
The entire Iluppaikadavai area is also under the total
control of the Tigers for a long time and locals dared not
in anyway involve in any activity in this area by
themselves. Many of them had moved outside
Tiger-controlled areas and some even fled to India.
It appears the Mannar Holy Father Soosaiappar Rayappu
chose a moment like this to make an outrageous statement
to protect the Wanni Terrorists. Why was he in such
desperate hurry to take a stand for the Tigers when all
these months and years he has overlooked all the violence
perpetrated by the Tigers, the massacres, using civilians
as human shields, child conscription and shocking and
shameful grabbing of screaming children from their
parents?
Your eminence, we are not impressed. In fact, we feel very
ashamed of you, ashamed that you wear the vestments of a
holy office and yet opt to lie on behalf of a brutal
outfit that threatens the very future of the Tamils in the
country.
The Catholic Church has been very much part of the LTTE
beginning as its loot keepers from all the bank robberies
committed by Prabhakaran. While the Catholic dioceses of
the North and East are actively behind the LTTE, the
Catholic Church in the rest of the country remains silent.
There is also a stark unifying factor. The Catholics in
Sri Lanka are predominantly coastal people and among both
the Sinhalese and Tamils come from the Karawa caste. When
socialist ideas were gathering momentum among these people
from latter 1930s, the Catholic Church became alarmed or
perhaps was told to make sure that socialist ideas never
took roots in Sri Lanka. This was why the Church
identified Buddhists and Hindus as potential communists.
Prabhakaran comes from the Tamil version of the Karawa
caste and all that the Church wanted was a repressive
force that would terrorize the country but yet would
remain loyal to the Church. The Tigers fitted that plan
very well.
Reports that appeared in the Tiger media supported by the
Mannar Holy Father stated that civilians were killed and
many injured were rushed to the Kilinochchi Hospital. Our
inquiries led to a different picture altogether.
Why were the injured taken far away to Kilinochchi, a
hospital that did not even have a nitro lingual spray for
Daya Master and he had to be rushed to Colombo. Very close
to the area that was bombed there is a well equipped Civil
Hospital in Mannar and also in Vavuniya.
The truth is that the injured and killed were Tiger cadres
and many of them children. Our investigations were well
conducted and we are also very familiar with the terrain
and also that many families who used to live in the
Iluppaikadavai area have moved out through sheer fear of
the Tigers. Even many of the fishing boats of the local
people were commandeered by the Tigers some years ago.
It appears that the TNA members are least concerned and
did not think it fit to check for themselves as to what
really happened there. They seem more interested in
playing some kind of a political chess in Tamilnadu; some
have expressed their desire to flee the country at the
earliest possible opportunity.
We regret to disagree with the statement made by the
Mannar Holy Father because they are not only disagreeable
but downright falsehood.
