At least five people traveling in a passenger bus were killed in a bomb blast on Friday, the military said, blaming the attack on separatist Tamil rebels.

The blast occurred in Nittambuwa town, 40 kilometers (24 miles) northeast of capital Colombo, an official at the Defense Ministry`s national security media center said.

He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the center`s policy.

The officer blamed Tamil Tiger guerrillas for the attack. Rebel officials were unavailable for comment.

Thirty other passengers were injured in the blast, the officer said.

Earlier senior police officer D.W. Prathapasinghe told The Associated Press that 80 people were inside the bus, adding that it was still not known whether the blast came from within the bus or outside.

Deliberately terrorising the civilains to gain political aims - terrorism. The bus bomb attack is yet another instance where LTTE potrays that it is a terrorist group and not a group of freedom fighters.

Here are the diffrences between a group of freedom fighters and a group of terrorists.

In 1940, when Nazis overran France, the French Resistance was born. The FR did not attack German civilians, ladies or children. They only carried out a campaign of attrition against the far more powerful Nazi army.

But take a classic terrorist outfit for example. Khmer Rouge. They did not only attack the Vietnamese forces but also attacked Vietnamese civilians, intellectuals (even non-intellectuals that wore spectacles were assassinated!). The ultimate human cost of that conflict was nearly 3 million people. Khmer Rouge instilled in the populace a sense of 'no one is safe'. Even after the conflict have ended, these regions are still paying for the atrocities of the Khemer Rouge.

What did the innocent that died in the 9/11 attacks have against the Jihadis? Basically nothing. Jihadis attacked these innocent civilians to instill a sense fear (or terror) in the greater population (at lease that was the Jihadis aimed for). Terrorists revel in the fact that there is a lack of connection between the cause that they are fighting for and the innocent people that suffer.

Then these terror groups use this environment of fear created in the general populace to achieve their political goals. Never in the history have any of these groups been concerned about defending the ideals they actively trample on (for example human rights). Terrorists will only honor the democratic ideals once these groups give up violence (renounce violence).

Having said that it would greatly help to end the war (or win the war against the LTTE) if GOSL also have a fair and just political goal to fight for (so that all people in Sri Lanka can enjoy the same rights and live with honor and dignity).

OutOfAfrica,

Spot on!

The only good this will do to the tigers is that the int'l community will only gain further proof that these 'freedom fighters' are really murderous thugs.

Raves,

(They may follow the CIA tactics)

I admit I'm in the dark as to the CIA's tactics in this regard. Could you please enlighten me on this?

Raves:

LTTE = 100% - Pure Terrorists!
Don't have to worry about equalizing percentages for other interest groups!

PS: Yesterday you commented that we quickly left, there is something wrong with LNP at time to time it doesn't allow to comment. Maybe depending on which country this problem occurs.
