Bogus IDs taboo
Wednesday, 3 January 2007 - 12:39 PM SL Time

Some media reports have revealed that the LTTE is issuing bogus identity cards to the North and East Tamil people. The Government reiterates that the only authority permitted to issue National Identity cards is the Commissioner of Registration of Persons, a media release by media centre for National Security said.

Any person possessing or issuing ID cards other than the National Identity Card issued by the Department of Registration of Persons is illegal and will be severely dealt with by the Government under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the Registration of Persons Act No. 32 of 1968, the release said.

Possessing or using such bogus ID cards is a punishable offence.

The Government has decided to take legal action against any institution or organisation that is issuing bogus ID cards, the release added.

Hi-tech IDs for LTTE-held NE
Tuesday, 2 January 2007 - 11:13 AM SL Time
The Civil Administration in LTTE administered regions in the NorthEast has launched Tamileelam National Registry of Persons from yesterday, the Tamilnet website reported.

The programme was inaugurated by the Tamil Eelam Department of Registration of Persons Commissioner S Jeyenthiran, by issuing the first national identity card to LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Monday, 1 January 2007 - 10:00 PM SL Time
Vaharai, a large backwater on Sri Lanka`s east coast, is an area with large fertile fields, lagoons and virgin forests in the northern part of the Batticaloa district. More than 15,000 residents and IDPs are now trapped in Vaharai as the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) conducts its brutal campaign to evict Tamils from the region, closing A-15 the main access road to the town, and imposing economic embargo, while Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) kfirs fly bombing raids terrorizing the civilians to flee. `They [LTTE] won`t be able to keep the civilians for long. Food and medicine is in short supply,` Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe, the top military spokesman, told Reuters in a interview Friday.

Happy New Year
Sunday, 31 December 2006 - 10:17 AM SL Time
Dear forum members,

Let me use this thread as a `welcome to 2007` and to give a summary of what went on this year in the forum and what`s in the pipe for next year.

Let me apologize for the update delays these days. I was in Sri Lanka for a couple of weeks (out of Colombo) and it was hard to keep the normal phase.

In 2006, traffic wise lanka newspapers gets a little over 1 million unique visitors every week. Out of them, only 5% to 7% are registered members. Others are regular visitors but they come to watch what the 5% to 7% has to say about news articles here. A major new feature named `senior member spaces` was added to the forum in November. This lets the senior members to run their sub forum / blog. In my opinion it`s doing great and it helps dilute political wars that often go on in the main threads. From last week I stopped giving new memberships over the counter. Membership activation links are given after a quick review now. This helps spammers from abusing the forum. A faq is is now published at http://www.lankanewspapers.com/news/faq.jsp

Broad base garment exports
Monday, 1 January 2007 - 11:21 PM SL Time
With 43 per cent of Sri Lanka`s export earning`s worth nearly a US $ billion , generated from the US and UK market and that 82% of Sri Lanka`s garments being absorbed by two countries i.e. U.S.A. (60%) and U.K. (22%), it is fair to comment that Sri Lanka`s export industry is in a vulnerable position. Further, with the recent cry from exporters to refund the VAT payments due also adds to working capital issues that will affect the strategies that should be implemented to make this industry competitive globally.

On the other hand developments in the global market such as the US Trade Representative (USTR), currently looking at a proposal to limit, suspend or withdraw trade preferences to Sri Lanka and a dozen other countries as part of a major GSP review ordered after the collapse of world trade talks, adds to the challenges the industry will have to face in the future, even though it will have very little impact for Sri Lanaka`s garments and textile industry.

JVP hoist with its own petard
Wednesday, 3 January 2007 - 12:27 AM SL Time
Political predictions and weather forecasts have one thing in common. More often than not, they go wrong. Some months ago, we happened to comment on a New Zealand politician who naively went by a prediction based on a Gallup poll that his contender didnhave a cat in hell`s chance of winning. So, he vowed to run across the city fully naked if his rival ever won. Alas, he won! And the poor man had to honour his election promise. Being a politician, he amended his pledge. He wore a G-string and ran through the city much to the amusement of the people.

When the SLFP forged an alliance with the JVP, the Jumbos shed crocodile tears. The JVP, they predicted, would swallow the SLFP before long! What a scare they gave the SLFP! Even some staunch SLFPers started worrying. Before the presidential election, they said the JVP plan was not to remote-control but to hijack the UPFA regime by manipulating Mr. Rajapakse. But nothing of the sort happened. It was clear to any student of politics from the beginning that, due to the electoral pact in question, the JVP would go the same way as the Communist Party and the LSSP, which have become mere appendages of the SLFP.

Battling corruption: Here`s a way!
Monday, 1 January 2007 - 10:04 PM SL Time
It is not prudent to swallow everything that foreign powers dish out hook, line and sinker, especially when it comes from those who have a history of peddling a hidden agenda. The global rich have for their developing counterparts the same love that the fox has for the pullets. Hence, the need for the poor countries to be on their guard and look the gift horses not only in the mouth but in the belly as well.

However, that argument should not be used as an excuse to spurn anything that is foreign?especially foreign remedies for local ills. Some time ago, we remember the Sri Lanka health authorities refused to learn from Cuba how to battle the much dreaded winged menace called mosquitoes, in spite of that country`s reputation for having adopted a method to control it successfully in an environmentally friendly manner. The popular belief is that the mosquito repellent manufacturers blocked the adoption of the Cuban remedy at that time with the help of politicians and bureaucrats.

Looking beyond Vakarai
Saturday, 30 December 2006 - 9:45 AM SL Time
It is speculated that the government might go for an election in the Eastern Province after the capture of Vakarai, which is imminent with the area surrounded and the LTTE combatants trapped without reinforcements and supplies. In other so-called thinly held areas in the East, the LTTE will still be operating, but the military boasts that it could be tackled without much effort. If the East could be cleared as planned, then it will certainly be a turning point in the war. For, the LTTE will have no control over both the strategically important Jaffna and the East, the be-all-and-end-all of its separatist project.

In the past, too, the LTTE was driven out of the East but it managed to hold on to the vital areas of the North, especially Jaffna and mitigate the loss. The East was brought under government control decisively by President D. B. Wijetunga, who conducted the Local Government elections there in the early 1990s. President Chandrika Kumaratunga adopted the opposite of his strategy. She took back Jaffna in 1995, at the expense of the East. She, of course, had compelling reasons to wrest control of that township. The LTTE had put most of its military eggs in the Jaffna basket and gone to the extent of issuing an Eelam stamp which pointed to a move to declare independence unilaterally. She may have thought of making a swift move. She won the day.

Sri Lanka crash to second defeat
Wednesday, 3 January 2007 - 12:36 PM SL Time
New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the third one-day international in Christchurch on Tuesday to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Set a revised target of 110 off 46 overs to win after Sri Lanka made 112 all out from their rain-shortened innings, New Zealand reached the mark in the 25th over when Peter Fulton smacked Dilhara Fernando for six.

Fulton finished unbeaten on 43 after sharing an unbroken partnership of 40 with James Franklin to guide the Kiwis to victory after they had slumped to 70 for six.

But New Zealand`s win was soured by a row over the dismissal of top-order batsman Ross Taylor, who was given out caught by Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck.

Dilshan claimed the catch but television replays later showed that he had dropped the ball.

Once in a lifetime line-up bids for rare sweep against England
Monday, 1 January 2007 - 11:17 PM SL Time
Shane Warne had a winning farewell on his home ground and now, the Australians reckon, it must be Glenn McGrath`s turn.

Opening batsman Justin Langer on Monday decided to join the bowling greats and call it quits on his test career after the Ashes, giving the Australian lineup plenty to play for in the series-closing match against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia is bidding to become only the second team to sweep a five-match Ashes series, the first since Warwick Armstrong`s team trounced England in 1920-21.

`As long as we all keep our emotions in check, then hopefully the performances that we`ve been putting on the board can continue,` Australia skipper Ricky Ponting said. Australia has won 11 consecutive test matches.

Warne, the leading wicket taker ever in test cricket, said he`s been jumping around like a teenager since announcing his retirement after Australia reclaimed the Ashes in Perth last month. His enthusiasm could be infectious.

Sri Lanka too opt for rotation
Monday, 1 January 2007 - 11:16 PM SL Time
Sri Lanka will make use of the next three One-Day games here in New Zealand to try out the reserve players in the squad to take a look at their form ahead of this year`s World Cup. Although the tourists initially declined to do too many changes in the ODIs, the continuous rotation policy of the hosts has encouraged Sri Lanka too not to go full strength.

Accordingly, senior paceman Chaminda Vaas will be rested for the third ODI at the Jade Stadium in Christchurch today along with Lasith Malinga, both of whom have missed just one Twenty-20 game in the tour so far.

They`ll be replaced by Dilhara Fernando and Ruchira Perera. Sri Lanka will also give an opportunity to other players in the squad like Malinga Bandara and Chamara Kapugedara when they move to the north island for the remainder of the series in Auckland and Hamilton.
