Ceylinco Healthcare offers free breast care consultation
Thursday, 28 September 2006 - 4:30 AM SL Time

Free breast care consultations with doctors will be available to women, courtesy of the Ceylinco Healthcare Centre in Colombo, in the month of October, dedicated universally to breast cancer awareness.

The Centre, which is the most advanced stand-alone private facility for cancer screening in Sri Lanka, said the objective of this programme is to provide advice and information to women on how to prevent breast cancer through regular self-examination and screening.

The free consultation facility will be on appointment and will comprise a physical examination by a doctor, who will also provide guidelines and awareness on proper breast care. As in previous years, the Centre will also distribute pink ribbons to visitors. Wearing a pink ribbon during October shows that the wearer honours survivors, remembers those lost to the disease and supports the search for a cure.

The focus of the Ceylinco Healthcare Centre every October is to encourage women to undergo Mammograms, a screening procedure recommended to be done regularly by women over the age of 40.

`It is known that Mammography is the gold standard and in the frontline of defence in the war against breast cancer,` Dr. Shyama Fernando, Senior Medical Officer of the Centre said. `A0`It has been established beyond any doubt that early detection of any form of cancer significantly improves the victim`s chances of curing or controlling the spread of the disease. In the case of breast cancer, early detection can prevent the loss of the breast and the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body.`

In Sri Lanka, breast cancer is the commonest form of cancer among females, and accounts for 22.5 per cent of all cancers in women.

The alarming situation can be reversed if more women are made aware that mammography can detect a cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt, and that cancers detected early can often be cured.

Established in collaboration with the world renowned Washington Hospital Centre, the Ceylinco Healthcare Centre is a ground-breaking project of Ceylinco Healthcare Services Ltd., (CHSL), a subsidiary of Ceylinco Life, the country`s leading life insurer. The Centre is equipped for oral, breast, colorectal, stomach and cervical cancer screening as well as for genetic testing to identify high-risk families. Tests such as mammography, colonoscopy, endoscopy, laryngoscopy, ultrasound screening and x-ray are performed at the centre in comfortable and pleasant surroundings. The Centre also has a comprehensive facility for chemotherapy infusions and is in the process of building the country`s first private radiation therapy centre.
