As I have mentioned earlier, I am being absorbed by quality movies that come out from different languages and cultural hub of world cinema. Tamil and Sinhalese forum members talk about their respective language films, once again we have been divided along the language line.

I have recently watched many 'critically acclaimed' movies - Hollywood and rest of world combined - let me share my experience with you all. All of these movies were ground breaking and different. Those movies may not to be included into really good artistic films, but surly they would fell into the good creativity genera.

(Only recent movies)

1) The Lord of the Rings - Peter Jackson did really good job in bringing the 'middle-earth' alive.

2) Finding Nemo - Redefined the computer animated-film genera. Fantastic story line and execution.

3) Tsotsi - (South African) - Tsotsi won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards.

4) The Motorcycle Diaries - (South America) - This movie based on Che Guevara about his travels through South America with his friend Alberto Granado.

5) City of God - (Brazilian) - The movie is about thugs who live in a slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

6) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - (Chinese) - When protagonists of the movie fights, they seem to possess magical powers of flying through the air, vaulting across roofs, and running up walls.

7) The World's Fastest Indian - is a movie based on the true story of Burt Munro from New Zealand, who broke the land speed record in his old 1920s Indian motorcycle. Anthony Hopkins played wonderfully his part as Burt.

And many more.

I think members had a chance to enjoy these movies. I like to have your suggestions as well.

'AAnivaer' is LTTE funded production through its cultural and art division.

Our productions at least reflect our own culture and people. Unlike Indian Tamils movies' directors who cast North Indian female leads to reflect Southern cultural stories, at least our productions totally defend on people a lot look like us.

My dear Kusumbu,

in fact i dont know how to define prasana,s 'iramadiyama' a sinhala film. will you disagree itf i say it a sri lankan film. becasu all the languages are spoken there. the carectors are from all back ground.

Buddy I don't disagree whether its Sinhalese or Sri Lankan film. The fact is its a good film. Language is a tool to portary or convey the message and in that respect number of Sinhalese films compared to the total number of films released are good ones. I think this is what Tamil films lack. We call it Pickel type films or Achcharu in Sinhalese.

I believe its the artiste that need to change the trend of stagnating film trend in a country and for that matter. Prasanna and a few more are there.

Movies can be used to educate people on social, family and moral values, but at the same time it should also contain artistic values.

In this context, some of the Sinhala movies (around 25%) are well advanced and excellent work of art, they can never be compared with Hindi or Tamil movies which are only good for entertaining when you need an emotional boost, but unfortunately 90% of them do not contribute to art.

I think, one of the reasons why the value of art has gone down to such an extent in Hindi and Tamil cinema is commercialism, in a bid to create an instant rich society.

I remember a very few high standard Tamil movies directed by K.Balachander who was trying to divert his attention towards artistic creations.
The recent Hindi movies such as 'BLACK' and ?water? are also a major diversion from their normal ones.

There were excellent Sinhala film directors like Dharmasiri Bandaranayake, Tissa Abeysekera and a few others who have made Sinhala movies world class.

Out of the Indian movies, some Bengali and a very few Malayalam movies can be compared to these high standard Sinhala movies.

Once again it all depends on the viewers, some simply do not understand art, but are happy with entertaining family movies.

Exactly. Dharmasiri made 'Hansa Vilak' and Tissa had made a quite a few top class films including 'Mahagedara' (the transalation of Checkov's 'Cherry Orchard').

In the recent times Dharmasiri's and Tissa's trend being taken over by young ones in the likes of Prasanna Vithanage and Asoka Handagama. I think these directors are an asset to our Sri Lankan film industry. Also cannot forget people like Pathiraja and evergreen Lester for their yeoman's service to the industry.

Black is one of the best hindi movies I have ever seen. However, Amithab Bachchan's contribution to that was priceless. Not to mention the talents of a little actress was incomparable.

In fact Deepa Mehta's 'Water' has been filmed (later part)in Sri Lanka as some groups in India opposed due to its topic and it took around seven years to complete. One of the actresses, a little girl, from Gall (Sangamiththa Girls's school-can not recall her name) won few awards.

Water Oscar Bound from Canada

Saturday September 23, 05:01 PM

Deepa Mehta's Water is headed to the Oscars but no it is not India's entry but rather Canada's official entry to the Oscars. Since the producer of the film is Canadian, it became Canada's entry. Director Deepa Mehta was elated with the development and so was actor Seema Biswas who was also part of the film's cast.

'I am very happy though I would have wanted it to be India's entry definitely. The setting was in India as was the whole star-cast but since it was produced by a Canadian, so it belongs to Canada. But I thank God for the opportunity and I hope the film does well for itself', said Seema.

Deepa Mehta's Water stars John Abraham, Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas in pivotal roles.
