| Maybe, many of Tamil movie fans in the forum would have disappointed because I have placed almost all of South Indian movies into one 'crap' bin. In fact, I am let down by the lack of creativity among the young directors. Most of them, not all of them, tend to copy, in some cases recreate, the grandness of Hollywood 'action' or/and 'love struck' movies. The social impact of those movies is slim to none. |

Sritharan..
New directors such as Bala, selvaragavan, Thangar Bachchan have all given good quality films. Bala's 'Naan Kadavul' (I'm God) is expected to be something different (his movies are usually very different from world cinema).
So.. I wouldn't say it's all bad for Tamil cinema, good young talent are begining to shine. |

Kanthun:
Bala, selva, and Thangar are following the foot steps of Bharathi Rajaa, K. Balachander, and Balu Mahendra of those days. In my personal beliefs, they try to redefine the Tamil movie industries by injecting creativity and realism into well known 'Masala' formulas. In Bala case, I think he is a master of fusing artistic performance of leads into 'Masala' frame works. I could imagine he would say that he wants to make a movie without those inevitable fight sequences and song scores. |

PP,
What happened to Pathiraje? Siri Gunesingha( Sath Samudura) migrated to Canada in early 70's and never made movies afterwards. But his one and only feature film 'Sath Samudura' was a master piece. Dr. Siri Gunesingha was also one of the best art critics in Sri Lanka.
There was another good director . J.D.L Perera who made 'Sama' is living in UK I think.
I wish we could see those movies in DVD format now. I know that very many Singhala classics got destroyed when Stupid Singhala thugs burnt the Vijaya Studio to show their patriotism ( Jathyaalaya) which never existed in them. |

I think you have to give credit to D B Nihalsignhe too on creating 'Sath Samudura'. Dr Gunasinghe and D B were the cornerstones of it together with Somadasa Elvitigala's music.
G D L lives in UK but often go to SL to do bits and pieces of work.

My Dear Kusumbu,
JRJ when did you last watch a good sinhala film. you know how many years it took to screen 'wekanda walawa'. show me a sinhala movie that is produced without forign aid
The last time I watch a good movie was 2 years ago I think. That was Prasanna's 'Purahanda Kaluwara'. I am not saying people can create films at their own finances in fact I didn't say that.
All I said the industry is thrived upon crap commercial films to rot cheap cinematic lovers than enhancing the overall quality or the taste of the creation and its hard to get a classic done and that needs both the creater and the sponsor in good terms (sponsor in sound financial terms).
I think Soma Edirisinghe was one who sponsored some good films if I am right.
