Other than movies by MGR and Sivaji there are many movies of Kamalahaasan that Singhalese loved to watch and one of them being GURU.
Mouna Raagam is a movie that really moved a friend of mine and he was crying for hours and hours.

Bongo Macho,
You know my Naki vissey, right?
Yes, that movie can't be as claimed.
I think this is the movie where this guy says we are awake when you sleep and we sleep when you are awake, referring to his life in USA.

I watched both 4 times and came out smelling like ....
It Was directed and written by Redde gu . I watched the prequel too . It was Kawda Kakus-seye
That year Oscar for best picture was given to Backanda Who
If i recall clearly the main stars were Jerry Camms & Hen Gollen
Magha,
Nawa ralla Pioneers were Darmasena, Wasantha, Tissa , Daramasiri and the so many others who tried to Infuse some Sri lankan values In to the the cinema .They not only made artistic Movies, They were commercially vialble too , Jayantha ,Asoka Prasanna belongs to the seconad generation of this ralla .
I could be wrong and Most of all am out of touch with the current developments .
Sarungale Nadarja was, one fine Charachter played by Sakwithi at that time . Nidanaya was a gem Too . Edited By - PilotPremanat - 24 Sep 2006 07:03:20 |

My Dear Sri,
I am not familiar with Sinhala movies, but I came across a few Sinhala tele-series when I was in Colombo. Without knowing or understanding a single word, I admired the realism in story telling of Sinhala tele-series directors. On the other hand, I don't like South Indian 'Mega' series in which case directors over explore the women' weaknesses and predictable story lines.
I have to admire your stance but let me tell you one more thing too. Most of the Sinhala tele-plays are crap too. Because the sponsors are interested in popular series (meaning light vein storylines) the automatic quality of the play is less than ordinary. But there are good ones in between. I am not a great tele-play viewer.
But in films the trend is somewhat different. In the early 60s and 70s the classical ones were made for small audiences due to their high calibre substance only a hand few people watched them. But recently despite heavy commercial thriving film industry things are getting pretty rosy for the good ones too. Young directors who have revolutionised the cinematic trend in Sinhalese movies, thus there is a considerable audience for it which is the best news.
I have not watched many tamil movies have to admit that and out of them I don't think I have watched any out of ordinary films that was my point. If there were good films I might have missed them by chance.
Any how I believe its the directors choice to introduce good quality movies to create a better audience than sticking to the lethargic insipid frame work. I have heard that there are workshops in related to increase the awareness of making better quality tamil movies in SL. Perhaps you can elaborate this further (people like Dr Sunil Ariyarathne who is well conversent in Tamil).
