Muslim National Alliance wants independent inquiry into Pottuvil killings

`As controversy surrounds the massacre of 10 Muslims in Pottuvil, it is imperative to make certain the only survivor who can shed more light on the gruesome massacre be given top class medical attention` said Nazeer Ahamed Secretary-General of the Muslim National Alliance (MNA) adding that he should be given protection to ensure that no untoward incident occurs.
Dismissing speculation Ahamed said that any group could have carried out this massacre and to blame one group without any evidence was not only foolhardy but also mischievous. `For sure the LTTE could have carried out the massacre, but we must remember the incident occurred in an area fully controlled by the government and protected by the Special Task Force (STF). `Many residents blame the STF for the massacre claiming the LTTE could not have carried out this brutality without being caught - There were STF camps around the scene where the massacre took place and it was puzzling how the LTTE could have escaped without being noticed by the STF said the MNA Secretary-General.
Nazeer Ahamed while strongly condemning Wednesdays shooting of 14 Muslims by the STF. said `There has been animosity between the Muslims and the STF for the past few months and calls had been made for the removal of the commander of the camp, but such demands had fallen on deaf ears`. He added today`s incident gives further justification and urgency for the commander`s removal.
Mr. Ahamed said he was amazed by the manner the Tamil media had covered the incident and wished they give the same coverage wherever Muslims suffer at the hands of LTTE. He also stated he was disappointed over the international community`s lackadaisical approach to the plight of Muslims in the country`s ethnic conflict. In this incident too the international community was apathetic to the plight of the Muslims, he said.
`I wish they would show the same concern to the slaughter of the Muslims as they showed to the 17 innocent NGO workers killed in Muttur` he said.
Nazeer Ahamed said he believed there was a sinister motive behind the horrible massacre `Muslims in Ampara believe this brutality could have been carried out by Sinhala chauvinist forces within the STF to embarrass President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the UN where he is billed to make an address`.
He called for an immediate and impartial inquiry into the slaughter of the innocent civilians and said the Government should accede to the demand of foreign participation in such an inquiry `if we have nothing to hide`.

My Dear ahmad,
First get the survivor out to some safe place before he kicks the bucket.
second, if he survives makes sure that he is not black mailed
Thirdly ensure the guy does not get a big 'santhosam' and turn the whole story
You Ask him in private, he will tell the truth and ask him in public and he will have to say LTTE! |

If there was an involvement of anyone within STF, they should be found guilty and served with a death sentence. There is no room for indiscipline within the police or the armed forces.
The whole STF camp has been removed at the request of local Muslim people. This happened after STF went on shooting protesters. This is a despicable act and the ones responsible should be punished.
Also there is this;
Potuvil Massacre, clearly an LTTE act- Muslim community leaders in the East

My friend you have misunderstood the whole issue and you are totally ignorant about Sri Lankan state of affairs.
The Natives, the Bumiputras, are a chosen people, who uphold the preaching of Lord Buddha and they cannot be held liable if they have committed any crimes against the minority. This is an unwritten law of Dhamma Deepa.
But more importantly if a member of the armed forces commits any crime then he cannot be touched at all and especially if it is directed against the minority then they are protected by universal immunity.
When the leader of the opposition late Mr.Amirthalingam was slapped by a constable in front of senior officers then he was transferred out of Jaffna (that itself is a promotion)and he was promoted by one rank.
Then every army commanders who had run riot in the N&E are appreciated by a posting as an ambassador abroad.
When Rajiv was thrashed on the head by a navy guy in a guard of honor (SL style)the President of SL came to his rescue and said he was suffering from heat stroke. In fact he almost became an MP for his deed(misdeed).
When some police officers violated the fundamental rights of some people in Colombo and fined by the courts the Dharmista aanduwa JR gave them promotions and paid the fines.
In today?s context there is no law and order and any one can do anything. What happened to the guys who murdered the detainees in Diyatalawa, what happened to the guys who raped and murdered Krishanthi? In fact criminals are staying in police stations and camps from where they go out and commit murders. These are guys who are protected by the government.
?It is frightening to think that the country has been ruled under emergency for so long that a whole generation of Police Officers have grown up with no knowledge perhaps of the normal law of the land. To them what was extraordinary to an earlier generation is the norm?.

So in a climate like this what are you talking of punishment? |

Nada,
Of course there are problems from racist Sinhalese as with racist Tamils and Muslims. However, we are discussing the incident of deaths of 15 innocents here. Therefore, we have to narrow our focus to this incident alone.
There were some confusion initially as to why the patient was suddenly transferred to a different hospital. I am guessing even the govt had at that time suspicion whether the STF may have been responsible. The only surviving wittiness has been warded at the hospital under care of doctors. The statement taken while in the presence of doctors, nurses and other staff. If there was some conspiracy to hide the truth, I am sure rumors would have already been spread.
On anecdotal evidence alone, many would find a hand with LTTE with the murders. Take for example, the death by hacking. To my knowledge, the STF or the armed forces have never killed anyone by hacking from 1992 onwards when Human Rights issues became part of soldier training. In addition, the people were killed while repairing a sluice gate. Who has bad experiences with sluice gates from recent past? These are only observations and we have to wait until the investigations are complete of course. However, I personally do not think it was the STF. |

Musketter............
Don't jump the gun.........
First let them find out the real culprits....
STF need to open fire not only on the LTTE but on unruly mobs who undermine the authority and the administration of a place.
If warnings are not heeded there is no other alternative..... |
